Too many scientists with way too much time on their hands.

Obama will change all that, keep those scientists busy.

4. No, this research tested a reasonable hypothesis.
It rejected that hypothesis -- that bullies are unfeeling. It showed that they feel pleasure when pain is inflicted on others. Some may consider that common sense, but it had not been demonstrated; and there was a reasonable alternative. The findings could be useful in devising strategies to reduce bullying.

Science does have it tough in this country. When it rejects views compatible with popular "common sense," it is said to be wrongheaded and worthless. But when it supports views compatible with popular "common sense," it is said to be useless. In fact, it tends to develop perspectives far more subtle than, and certainly better based in fact than, "common sense," but that too often escapes its critics.
