Rahm Emmanuel Sent a Decomposing Fish to a Pollster??!!
The best Rahm Emanuel story is not the one about the decomposing two-and-a-half-foot fish he sent to a pollster who displeased him. It is not about the time - the many times - that he hung up on political contributors in a Chicago mayor's race, saying he was embarrassed to accept their $5,000 checks because they were $25,000 kind of guys. No, the definitive Rahm Emanuel story takes place in Little Rock, Ark., in the heady days after Bill Clinton was first elected President.

It was there that Emanuel, then Clinton's chief fund-raiser, repaired with George Stephanopoulos, Mandy Grunwald and other aides to Doe's, the campaign hangout. Revenge was heavy in the air as the group discussed the enemies - Democrats, Republicans, members of the press - who wronged them during the 1992 campaign. Clifford Jackson, the ex-friend of the President and peddler of the Clinton draft-dodging stories, was high on the list. So was William Donald Schaefer, then the Governor of Maryland and a Democrat who endorsed George Bush. Nathan Landow, the fund-raiser who backed the candidacy of Paul Tsongas, made it, too.

Suddenly Emanuel grabbed his steak knife and, as those who were there remember it, shouted out the name of another enemy, lifted the knife, then brought it down with full force into the table.

''Dead!'' he screamed.

The group immediately joined in the cathartic release: ''Nat Landow! Dead! Cliff Jackson! Dead! Bill Schaefer! Dead!''

Does anyone else get the feeling we might be dealing with the mob here? The first thing that tipped me off was the missing finger. I just happened to have just watched a movie where this was illustrated as a punishment in the mafia. Supposedly he lost the finger in an Arby's meat cutting incident, however employees at Arbys do not cut the meat at the restaurant. And now this??? Maybe Obama didn't choose Rahm, he was told who he would 'choose'.

Pollsters are responsible for making me a nervous wreck throughout this campaign, so no sympathy.

5. If it was a Republican doing these things, the media would say it was a sign of strength & toughness
The Repukes are a bunch of bullying thugs.

We need someone like Rahm Emanuel to stand up to them, and someone like Obama to restrain him and keep him in check.

Obama ain't fuckin' around.

This gives me hope.

If you can't recognize a stress release when you see it, find some way to educate yourself.

Here's a question you might want to research: DID ANY OF THOSE PEOPLE END UP DEAD?

Now stop behaving like an ass.

That drive only increased when Emanuel suffered an accident just before his 1977 graduation from New Trier West High School. Working at an Arby's, Emanuel badly cut the middle finger of his right hand. He insisted on going to prom festivities anyway, including a swim in Lake Michigan, and the finger became badly infected. Emanuel, his family recalled, lay near death in Children's Memorial Hospital with a fever of 106 degrees, as antibiotics were pumped into him. In the end, doctors removed half his finger.

Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 12:51 PM by brentspeak
His hand-picked man, former Repub -- and newly uncovered corrupt philanderer -- Tim Mahoney, lost easily this week to his Republican opponent, Tom Rooney. It was Emanuel, back in 2006, who prevented excellent progressive Donald Lutrin from getting the Dem nomination in the contest for disgraced Mark Foley's seat. Had Rahm not been the Kingmaker, we'd likely today be congratulating Lutrin for winning reelection.

27. exactly
I have a feeling that's precisely why Barack picked him, he needs a first class sonofabitch looking out for him, and if Rahm is that guy, I don't have a problem with it. The GOP has been wounded badly in this election cycle, but they are NOT going away. If we think they were mean and nasty before, we ain't seen nothin' yet. One thing is for sure, being a bunch of candy-asses will get us nowhere fast.

The stinky fish thing is a good start, but if he really wants to impress me, Rove will find a severed pig's head in his bed.

Rahm giving Barack the "Chicago Way" speech when the GOp starts to attack the Administration.

"They pull a knife, you pull a gun! He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue!!!! *That's* the *Chicago* way! "

Haha. I think it might just work out.

I, too, would love to live in a parallel world where Richard M. Scaife's publishing staff and/or machinists all went on strike for 8 years, where David Brock was convinced to start Media Matters a decade before he actually did, where Lucianne Goldberg couldn't get a book published if the author was Stephen King ... etc., etc.

To those rethugs already not scared shitless, listen up - the enforcer is now on board. Start building your bomb shelters immediately, in a few months Rham will come for your guns and your women door to door with the O man in tow. Then, if everything goes according to plans, they will begin the redistribution program immediately.

You know when I stopped feeling uneasy about the election? When someone pointed out on a site that I was reading that Obama came up through the Chicago political machine - and not only survived, but prospered. All of a sudden I realized we had exactly what we needed: someone with a spine.

Emanuel's style works just dandy for me. I'm tired of being the Doormat Party.

46. No, he's not the equivalent of Rove.
But people's interpretation of events is colored by what side your bread is buttered on. If that was a Republican, any Republican, acting this way, do you honestly believe it would be viewed as affectionately? Honestly now?

As far as giving him a chance (in the context of trusting Obama), I will, and have said so:

"I'm guessing he picked Rahm because of qualities that don't necessarily have to do with policy. If Obama needed someone he could trust, who he's known personally for a long time, who knows where the bodies are buried, and who's disciplined and an enforcer, then Rahm is a decent enough choice. When you look at past Cheif of Staff's, the successful ones are typically in that mold, Jim Baker for one, who made sure Bush the Dimmmer won Florida. Rahm is that same take no prisoners kind of guy, maybe that's why he picked him.

I hope that's the case, because I'm still a Deaniac. I actually still think he could've won in 2004, if he had had the party with him.

I'm willing to give him a chance before I start firing; getting as far as he has with what the McCain campaign threw at him, while remaining unflappable, means that he has earned my trust, for now."
