I am proud to say that gay marriage is legal here in Massachusetts-

Opponents of gay marriage insisted the sky would fall, and all marriages would implode if gay people marry....Well,we're still here, and the world never ended.....

Right wingers can't touch gay marriage in MA,so they just found other groups of people to hate, like Hispanic immigrants.....

Look,if gay couples can't marry in California, just come Massachusetts to be married..

1. That's why Prop 8 in CA is nonsensical. You can't be married in one state and not another.
It just doesn't work that way.

3. I remember a very cheeky article some years ago about the effects of equal marriage in Mass
It was on the one year anniversary, and was published in an alternative weekly in Boston (I think it was.)

The gist was, "Same-sex marriage has existed in this state for a year. I look out my window, and I see a few couples, all straight, and some individuals. They are walking along window shopping or chatting. One couple -- mixed gender, older and clearly in deep love for one another -- is sitting on a park bench, just holding hands and watching passers-by.

"Damn you, religious conservatives! You promised me forced conversions to homosexuality, and my cute neighbor is still hopelessly heterosexual! You promised me public sex in the streets; where is it? I WANT ME SOME PUBLIC FORNICATION!"

Very funny.

4. Massachusetts is different than California.
California is liberal on the coasts and conservative inland, and has way more fundamentalist Christians than Mass. Mass has a 'mind-your-own-business' attitude toward matters of sex, marriage, and religion, which stems from old Yankee attitudes toward privacy. This is why when there was hoopla around gay marriage, they were busing people in from out-of-state churches to stand in front of the state house in Boston. Like California, most of the money came from out of state anti-gay organizations (the exception being Mass Resistance and the Massachusetts Family Institute).

Although prop 8 passed, there may be some hope that the supreme court in CA shoots it down.

5. All true, but there's another important difference
After same-sex marriage became legal in MA, there was never anything like Proposition 8 for people to vote on. Massachusetts takes representative democracy seriously and won't allow basic matters of equal rights to be shot down by 52% of the population.
