Just got my electric bill.
I put heat on for a few hours each night. Leave it off during the day. $145 and it's not even cold yet. We're probably looking at $400 per month. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

1. That's a bummer
Which state?

Here in my town, we get our energy from water and are charged a pretty decent rate over what alot of others pay. My house is all electric with a heat pump and I think my highest bill ever was like $208.

I'd love to supplement some of it with Solar some day.

6. NH
We have two electric suppliers. I have the one who charges twice as much as the other. I really need to move to Conway.

3. I figured that too. So I got on thieer equal paymant plan for at least the winter
I had three and four hundred dollar bills last winter and didn't get caught up until April or May. My bill will be 162.00 a month at least for now. Hopefully, I can keep that up at least through the winter months.

5. Be thankful you don't have heating oil.
Cha-ching. Which is why we switched to wood.

8. We can't even get wood in the middle of god damn NH
all the wood is green. Whoever lived in our place last year used green wood so the stove is almost impossible to use even after cleaning it.

with no AC until around May. So.....May to October is 5 months. How many months do you have to have full heat on?

10. I had to take a few trees out of my yard last spring
that were in danger of landing on the house in a storm.

I have a winter's worth of firewood now. We might have to sleep in the livingroom on a few extra cold nights this winter but it beats giving our money to the energy companies.

(Yeah it DOES get cold in the winter in Sedona at 4500 feet)

11. We saved a ton of money this summer on AC..
We live in the South, where AC is pretty much a necessity for six months per year unless you have 12 foot ceilings in a home designed for no AC. I grew up in a home like that but they are exceedingly rare nowadays.

I disconnected the central AC and ran two small window units for the hot season, kept the house nearly as cool, dehumidified even better and cut our electric bill by over 1/3. One 6500 BTU unit in our bedroom kept the bedroom very comfortable for sleeping and another 6500 BTU unit in the kitchen kept the hottest part of the house bearable even at the hottest time.

That and ceiling fans in every room made our 95 + degree and 80% + humidity days bearable.

I picked up one unit at a pawn shop a few years ago for $50, that's the one in the bedroom. The one in the kitchen I got in late Spring and it cost me $99, paid for itself in about a month.

14. One of the advantages of living in an apartment, I guess
Included heat and hot water.

And my electric bill is only $50 a month.

'course, I'm still running a deficit every month... :-(

16. Wow, I feel real bad here.
You know, this is just one of the things the people in my region take for granted. The cost of heating and cooling our homes.

Like I said, I got some pretty decent rates. I think my lowest bill this year was like $63

My summer cooling cost was like $150 or so, I'm predicting winter to average me about $180 a month if it's a mild winter.

Couldn't imagine paying some of the prices that others do.

21. My electric bill averages $150 a month & we haven't used the heater in 2 winters
because it's broken and we can't afford the 5K to 6K a new system will cost. We've been using the wood stove but I miss the ability to have heat at the touch of a button. But I just don't know if it's worth the $400 or so a month it would cost either. :(

22. Our highest electric bill this summer was $185
of course, we don't have air conditioning or even a swamp cooler (which makes it a bitch in phoenix) and we won't have heat this winter either, but we won't freeze because it doesn't get that cold. but we're contemplating a move to someplace that doesn't require and ac unit...there must be someplace like that
