How did "Pork Barrel Spending" get such a bad name?

I've never understood why it is a bad thing for senators and representatives to try to bring spending to their home states in the form of pork.

Sure it costs the taxpayer, but it actually (usually) creates jobs and economic growth here at home in America.

Unlike the bottomless black hole of IRAQ.

And it always seems that people hate pork, except for the pork coming to their own state...

1. It's great when my state gets it, but those other fucking 49 states are a bunch of leeching bums!

3. Often the benefits are local but the whole country pays
Some pork is more legit than others, as in a situation where manufacturing a product locally prevents outsourcing to another country. But should taxpayers in Mississippi put up the dough to build a bridge to nowhere in Alaska?
