A since-fired campaign worker for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain's Pittsburgh office is set to appear in a Pittsburgh courtroom to determine if she will stand trial for falsely reporting she was robbed and attacked by a man who disliked her bumper sticker.

She is a McCain supporter - WTF is up with that headline?

A since-fired McCain campaign worker is set to appear in a Pittsburgh courtroom to determine if she will stand trial for falsely reporting she was robbed and attacked by a man who disliked her McCain bumper sticker.

Twenty-year-old Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, has been jailed since Friday when police say she admitted making up the alleged attack on Oct. 22. Todd has undergone a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation while in jail.

That was a headline on CNN back in the 90's.

4. "Alleged" is how someone on trial should be referred to
As much as you or I or anyone may feel about someone's guilt, even if it is blindingly obvious, we still do the "innocent til proven guilty" ideal.

7. Except that my headline would have been
McCain Supporter, Alleged Mugging Victim Ashley Todd, bla bla bla. Afterall she is not an alleged McCain supporter - she is a card carrying McCain supporter.

11. "supporting" would have been better than "supporter"
Few newspaper writers are journalists these days.

12. If a Newfie is a Newfoundlander, well said.
FYI folks, in Canada, they tell Newfie jokes like we in Texas tell Aggie jokes.

As a UT grad, it is my duty to always rag on the Texas A&M Aggies, although there are some great grads of the school.

It's in Brenham, home of the the little creamery where they make Blue Bell Ice Cream.

Blinn makes A&M look like Cambridge by comparison.

McCain Worker Cuts Deal In Made-Up Assault Case
Thursday, October 30, 2008 – updated: 11:01 am EDT October 30, 2008

PITTSBURGH -- A Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain campaign volunteer accused of making up a story about being assaulted in Pittsburgh by a man who disliked her Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain bumper sticker will enter a program for first-time offenders.

SLIDESHOW: Check Out Our Slideshow

Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, will be released from jail and be required to undergo mental health treatment. Her record eventually will be expunged as long as she goes to treatment, stays out of trouble and keeps authorities apprised of her whereabouts. Todd had been jailed since Friday when police said she admitted making up the attack story on Oct. 22 in Bloomfield.

Pittsburgh police said Todd couldn't explain why she invented the entire story, and doesn't remember carving a "B" onto her cheek, though she told police she's sure she did it to herself.

Todd initially told police a mugger, whom she described as being black, noticed a McCain-Palin bumper sticker on her car and told her he was going to teach her a lesson.

17. She was declared competent For trial

<snip>
The judge, however, is allowing Todd, a former volunteer for the McCain campaign, to leave the area on non-monetary bond to stay with an uncle in New York.

But the judge has also said that she has to receive psychiatric treatment every two weeks. She will then enter into an accelerated rehabilitation program, if she can provide proof of that once she returns to court in Pittsburgh.

Todd's next court date is set for January 9.

This report is much clearer.
<snip>
Ashley Todd of College Station, Texas, waived her right to today's preliminary hearing in Municipal Court.

Officials announced that the jail's behavior clinic had cleared her for release and found her competent to stand trial.

But a trial won't be necessary if she successfully completes terms required for her today.

She will be released to an uncle in New York State and must provide proof every two weeks that she is receiving counseling. Eventually she is to return to her mother's home in Texas.

Ms. Todd is to enter the county's Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program, which allows non-violent, first-time offenders to have their records expunged if they successfully complete the terms of their probation.
