East Devon and parts of Cornwall have been hit by serious flooding after a night of storms, including severe rain and heavy hail.

Devon and Somerset fire service described the situation in the Ottery St Mary area as "absolute chaos".

Police said that a pregnant woman, who had gone into labour, had to be rescued from a car and about 25 people have been rescued from their homes.

An evacuation centre has been set up at the hospital in Ottery St Mary.

A police spokesman said: "There have been a series of weather-related road collisions.

"This included a road accident near Honiton with a female giving birth who had to be transported by ambulance to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital."

He said "many" vehicles, including a 38ft-long (11.6m) lorry, had been trapped in flood water.

Edited on Thu Oct-30-08 07:59 AM by TexasProgresive
they haven't had a real summer and now an early and violent winter- What keeps this area comfortable is the warming on the Gulf Stream- I wonder if the Atlantic conveyor is slowing down.

3. OMG, that's HAIL! Wow - I have never seen anything like that in my life.

Hail drifts six feet high. Jesus. That's almost unbelievable. Holy crap. We've got relatives in Cornwall.

It's cold here (near Glasgow) but no snow where we're at. I caught a glimpse of some on the mountains north of Glasgow the other day, though.

how hail can come down like that - that looks like it's as deep as 6" of snow! Unbelievable!

You can never predict anything about the English weather (though definitely warmer overall now than 30 or 40 years ago).

No snow here in Oxford itself; but there was some yesterday in nearby rural areas.

7. I Have An Associate In Manchester
He told me that between the beginning of July and when he was in the states in mid-September, they had only had 4 days with no rain!

Four days without rain out of more than 70.

He said he thought he might need a boat to get to and from work.

9. Well if it doesn't stop raining in Kingston
soon I may be in the same 'boat'. Fugging hell it's been raining for 36 hours here and I see no let up in sight. At least the temperature here is pleasant.
