McCain and Bush, Saakashvili and Putin
For some time now I had thought that the War in Georgia was brought about because Georgian President Saakashvili foolishly walked into a clever trap set by the Russians in South Ossetia.

But then today McCain mentioned that he gets foreign policy advice from Henry Kissinger.

And suddenly things clicked into place.

The Georgian War caused the Russian stockmarket to crash because foreign investment was pulled out. So while it looks like Shakashvili was a fool, it may have been the Russians who were lured into an even bigger trap by the Americans.

Saakashvili was possibly betrayed by the Bush-McCain team. He believed that if he attacked, the Americans and the other NATO countries would rush to his aid. There are a few people who have learned the hard way how well they can trust a member of the Bush Family. Like Manuel Noriega and Saddam Hussein for example. On the off chance that the Georgian forces prevailed and/or Putin backed down, McCain would have looked like a hero, but the Russians would not have suffered financially. The Bush-McCain team was in a win-win situation. And Saakashvili was risking the bet.

We know Kissinger is an old hand at this sort of thing but it could have been cooked up by somebody else. In any event, keeping Putin under the thumb is a task for anybody whether Democratic or Republican.

The exact number of civilians in South Ossetia who were killed as a result of this war is unknown but seems to be somewhere around 350. The Russians claim 71 killed and 270 Georgian soldiers were killed. Georgian civilian dead are listed as 69 plus 13 Ministry of Internal Affairs personnel. All told several thousand people were wounded.

Saakashvili cannot come out and come clean in the event McCain becomes President of the US.

After the election we may find out the rest of that story too.
