Debate on Academic Freedom with David Horowitz, author of "Indoctrination U.," and Cary Nelson, President of the American Association of University Professors

At the National Academic Freedom Conference in Washington, DC, David Horowitz and Cary Nelson debate academic freedom at American universities. Mr. Horowitz's new book, "Indoctrination U.," argues that liberal professors force their political beliefs onto students, at the expense of providing a democratic education. Cary Nelson's book, "Office Hours," argues that conservatives are compromising educational quality by imposing intellectual surveillance on faculty members.

David Horowitz was an organizer of the New Left movement in the 1960s and is now founding editor of Frontpagemag.com. His books include "The Professors: The 100 Most Dangerous Academics in America" and "Radical Son," an autobiography. He is president of the David Horowitz Freedom Center. Cary Nelson is president of the American Association of University Professors. He is an English professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the co-author of "Office Hours: Activism and Change in the Academy" and co-editor of "Higher Education Under Fire: Politics, Economics, and the Crisis of the Humanities."

Chris Hedges
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/0207/btv020407_4b.ram

In "American Fascists," former New York Times foreign correspondent and Harvard Divinity School graduate Chris Hedges warns that the Christian Right is threatening a tolerant, free American society. Hedges describes what he considers to be the movement's ideological ancestors - the Italian and German fascist movements of the early 20th century - and also argues that contemporary "American Fascism" manifests itself in militant, sexist, and homophobic behaviors and policies.

Chris Hedges is a Senior Fellow at The Nation Institute in New York City. A former foreign correspondent for the New York Times, he was part of the team that won a 2002 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of global terrorism. He also received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism. Hedges is author of "Losing Moses on the Freeway" and "War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning," the latter of which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. On Saturday, March 17 at 12:00 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Fire: The Bombing of Germany 1940-1945
Jorg Friedrich

The Allied bombing of Germany during World War II resulted in 600,000 casualties - 70,000 of them children - and devastated the landscape of historic cities such as Dresden. In "The Fire," German historian Jorg Friedrich combines narrative, first-hand testimony, and history to depict the air-raids as they were experienced by German civilians. He also considers Allied rationale for the bombing and whether or not the campaign influenced the war's outcome. Since its initial publication in German in 2002, the book has been translated into ten languages.

German-born historian Jorg Friedrich worked as a broadcaster in Berlin before covering the Majdanek Trial in the 1970s. He is author of "The Cold Amnesty," which was a bestseller in the Federal Republic, and "The Law of War." "The Fire" has been translated into ten languages since its first publication in German in 2002.

He argues that while this justification is used today to limit criticism of the Chinese government's human rights record, it is possible that China could liberalize its economy while continuining to repress its citizens.

James Mann is the author of "The Rise of the Vulcans: The History of Bush's War Cabinet." He covered China for the Los Angeles Times and was the newspaper's Beijing bureau chief from 1984 to 1987. He is currently author in residence at Johns Hopkins' Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

Monkey Girl: Evolution, Education, Religion, and the Battle for America's Soul
Edward Humes
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/0307/btv030307_4b.ram

In "Monkey Girl," Edward Hughes tells the story of the 2005 court case Kitzmiller et al. v. Dover Area School District, in which teachers and parents sued the Dover, Pennsylvania school district and school board for mandating the teaching of intelligent design, the theory that the existence of life on earth can only be explained by the participation of a designer. They argued that intelligent design is thinly-disguised creationism and that teaching it violates the constitutional separation of church and state. The school board argued that intelligent design is a scientific theory and should be taught alongside evolution. On Dec. 20, 2005, Judge John Jones ruled the school board had violated the constitution and also that "intelligent design was a religious proposition, and not science."

Edward Hughes is the author of eight nonfiction books, including "Mississippi Mud," "School of Dreams," and "Over Here." He is writer at large for Los Angeles Magazine. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for his reporting on the military in Southern California.

that I had to learn to read so I could read that book, "Mujercitas".

So I did. I was four. And I didn't ask what Apollyon was for about 10 years because I thought I was supposed to know.

It's funny, though, because Little Women is a gateway to all the major English Renaissance poets AND to the Americans -- Whitman, Thoreau, Emerson. Of course, some people favor her bodice rippers.

71. Hey.
I'll have to get back with you about that.

I almost missed your post. Oops.

Great, every other time I have great ideas for posters and my mind just decided to go blank!

I'll see what's what and get back with you or just see you there.

If I think of poster stuff, I'll post that, too.
