The Children of Darfur, the Children of Wall Street

Just don’t look into those big eyes that are glazed and covered with flies. They’ll trick you. They are so empty of hope that you can only tell when they are gone by the stillness of the little bellies that earlier swelled and collapsed as if a soul were trying to escape, a soul that might, perhaps, with celestial irony, be reborn in the plump, white body of a Republican. As long as we gape instead at hail Mary passes and images of the Virgin in mall windows we don’t have to see those scraps and bones tossed into mass graves for disposal.

All that suffering and dying is quite all right, of course, as it proves we’re superior. We’re white, we’re Christian, we’re American, they’re not. What else needs to be said? Oh, and it’s too expensive to help them. A trillion or so for wars comes first. Then a trillion or so to save the banks, that’s important. Sorry, nothing’s left. But let’s send our CEOs to a spa to massage away their cares, poor dears, it’s the right thing to do. Just think of what they accomplished with their “hard work”: Bin Laden tried and failed to cripple our economy, but our guys succeeded. Can’t beat good old American know-how, can you? Shows how much better we are than the children of Darfur, and not the slightest bit smug about it.
