Here at work, you can cut the tension between Dems and rethugs with a knife
Words between myself and those colleagues that drank the kool-aid are slim, albeit we are doing our jobs.

All the intriguing political discussions at lunch have morphed into an understanding that in 8 short days - one side is going to be devastated. I can't wrap my mind around any other outcome than an Obama victory. Fortunately, using my deductive head - Obama is positioned well for victory.

In no way am I proclaiming an Obama victory next week out loud, in fact - I'm not proclaiming a damn thing. The two most rightie wackos at work have reverted to the puke talking points of Obama is a Socialist. So stupid are the remarks from these idiots, that my pat response is enjoy your delusions for the next week.

I notice some neanderthal anger welling up inside, and am tempted to say y'all are so gonna get your asses kicked next Tuesday - can you say landslide?!

Alas, I patiently await our celebration, but lots of fighting words being tossed around till then!

How are things in your world?

1. Point out ..
..that the constitution of the US states that government is supposed to work toward the

COMMON GOOD!

I don't know why Democrats to quote the constitution more often. It's quite obvious that its authors had in mind that it was written to protect the little people.

4. But isn't that "common good" supposed to trickle down from above?
That is what we are supposed to believe if we vote Republican...

9. Well, to me...

..."common" means the everyday, not the "exceptional." Besides if "trickle down" worked, we wouldn't be in this mess. So why keep doing something that doesn't work?

with a smile of course as you walk away but just a calm serene smile...:-)

3. I passed on to Ms. Undecided (?) at work the wise words of David Sedaris...
it's like the flight attendant coming to your aisle, stopping and asking 'Chicken or shit w/bits of ground glass?' and the undecided voter asks 'How's the chicken cooked?" Apologies for misquoting but you get the drift.

HOW CAN YOU BE UNDECIDED AT THIS POINT?

5. I've said before-- I don't think I even know any republicans...
...except for the ones in my own family-- whom I rarely have any contact with. But in my neighborhood and workplace? I'm sure there are a few, but not that you'd notice. This is a pretty liberal area, and I work at a VERY liberal university.

Sorry to hear you have to share workspace with republicans!

How I'd love to be surrounded by like-minded and hearted folks..:eyes:

There are a few other progressives here, but most seem to fall in the middle someplace - and a handful are lost in the far right.

Life sometimes requires compromise, and to work in a moderately conservative workplace and live in a red county --- I get to fall asleep listening to coyotes howl, am surrounded by wild things at home in the woods, and can be hiking, skiing, windsurfing, and/or mountain-biking all within minutes here along on the east slopes of the Cascade Mts.

So I put up with f'ing puke idiots, but I can see all the stars at night - and not one traffic light in the 13 mile drive to work.

But this close to such a seachange of an election, I deeply miss the fellowship of many who believe the same. Of course, there is always DU! :hi: :pals:

6. All they want to do is
argue about BS, pointless things. One tried to start an argument about Spike Lee being racist. Another is all like Well Obama is a socialist..socialist this socialist that. Its really annoying. I try and call them out on it and you can just see the frustration boiling up in their eyes and then they just spew off more outlandish things. I feel like talking to people who are stuck in another world.. I dont understand how people can really believe such crazy things. I like to think of my self as logical and reasonable and dont understand why people think such shit is ok.

8. Tell them that Teddy Roosevelt was a republican who started the
progressive income tax, and that Reagan began the earned income credit.

10. Socialist TPs: Ford, Reagan, McCain, Palin ALL socialist
In 1986, Reagan signed legislation greatly increasing the earned income tax credit, a credit for low-income workers that reduces the impact of payroll taxes in order to boost take-home pay above poverty levels. When the credit is more than the amount of federal income taxes owed by an individual, that person receives a tax “refund.”

“It's the best anti-poverty, the best pro-family, the best job creation measure to come out of Congress.”
- Ronald Reagan

Palin rules a state with no income tax, AK shares the wealth with common people.

Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 01:00 PM by OmelasExpat
It not like they have much regard for "bleeding heart" politeness anyway.

If (when, actually) Obama wins it will be the best thing that ever happened to them. I guarantee that they will be the first to sign up for any kind of "socialist" health care system Obama comes up with. I have never seen a libertarian or conservative turn down a government paycheck or benefit. They just rationalize it "getting some of their's back".

Also, they'll have a new spite fetish object to bond with each other over. Remind them of that.

21. Yes - they ALL will benefit from Obama's economic plan!
But they have succumbed to the hate-fest and are voting McBush basically because they are stupid bigots. Truly hard to have any kind of rational conversation.

I expect when I ask them how things are going a year into an Obama presidency, I may get a different answer.

27. You know them well - they need their spite.
And you're right, you can't expect rational conversation from people who consistently vote against their own best interests just to fit into their social support group. Rational people look for a better group.

17. I only know two Republicans.
They are racists, anti-immigration, anti-(National)Health Care, Obama-is-a-Muslim, anti- any kind of regulation, you name it.

They are also Germans who immigrated from Mexico in 1987 so their son could attend better schools and they could have better health care.

19. I got ya'll beat
I'd bet I'm surrounded at least 50 to 1. I can count on one hand the number of dems I know in this 4000+ size company. I'm sure there are more, we just don't particularly expose ourselves much. Folks know, we leave it be.

I listen over walls all the time. Folks don't really realize I'm around most of the time. There are some thoughtful people that just don't believe in progressive taxation, large government, gay rights, etc. I can accept that. I think they're wrong but they are thoughtful. But the more vocal are always the ones apparently getting all of their thoughts straight from FOX. I don't even bother to point out everything they "know" which is wrong.

22. Just tell all the stupid Rethuglicans at work...
that in 8 years when their 401ks have rebounded, their pensions are protected, health care is cheap and accessible, and our national honor across the globe is restored that "they'll be glad someone in this country had the balls do what was necessary for the country."

Seriously, ANYONE voting for McCain deserves their lot in life, no matter how bad it may be. If you have cancer but can't afford your medical bills, you just lost your job and you're children are being shipped to Iraq but you voted for McCAIN and/or Bush I HAVE ZERO REMORSE OR CONCERN FOR YOUR CONDITION. You are not helping yourself, so why should I help you.

There are no repukes here (or if there are, they're keeping it zipped). Even my assistant the recovering repuke has been firmly on board for several months now.

Of course, this is a nonprofit agency. Not exactly community organizers, but close enough...
