Oh, my God. They really are demented.
I was a fly on the wall with one of those chain letters that get circulated through e-mail, except this time there was an exchange between the people on the list file. One, a Dem, laid it all on the line, how the "Obama is a Muslim" and all the other lies they're listening to is Republican propaganda and that the only way they could even consider that information this late in the game is because they are listening to exclusively right-wing news.

You know what the response was? "How can we be deceived if God is on our side?"

Is it clear yet that this kind of thinking is generating from the churches? Outside a church on their billboard just a few weeks ago it said, "One on God's side is a majority." What could they have been suggesting to their people in the sermon?

Okay, is it becoming clearer to all of you who want to attack DUers who are recognizing that the problem is that politics is being preached from the pulpit? We got a problem which is only going to get worse if we can't discuss where the information is being spread. Maybe it's time you think back about what Ralph Reed was able to do when he harnessed this group, and start thinking about the next step.

I'm suggesting that it's time to hold their leaders accountable for all the misdeeds they've been able to get away with. Start at the federal level and work your way down. It's time to cut out the middle-man and allow these people a chance to start thinking for themselves.

1. I don't remember who first said it, but my response to this is always
you need to pray that you're on God's side instead of assuming God is on your side.

2. With God, there are no "sides".
By definition. "Sides" are a human, ego-based concept. To preach otherwise is sacrilegious.

3. Remind those same people
that when Obama is elected President next week it's God's will. He wanted it to happen. Expect some smoke to rise from their brains.

are often unknowingly working on behalf of the devil.

What if there is no God?

They are twice deceived.

10. Speaking as a Christian myself, this is
complete bullshit and I'm so damned tired of it. My usual response is "yeah, well I talked to God just this morning and that's not what he told me!" Shuts 'em down every time!

flexible in these things.

13. Not as much politics, as this need to carve everything into two groups.
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 09:57 AM by rucky
it breeds intolerance and fuels this righteous hatfulness I see among these people. It's directly tied to the churches - no doubt about it.

As a matter of approach, we do need the IRS to go after these churches' tax-exempt status, but that will polarize just as much.

We also need a sane evangelical movement to broaden itself. I know this sounds like a contradiction in terms, but just spreading a positive, helpful and tolerant religious message will bring some of these freaks into the fold a hellova lot more effectively than simply trying to shut them down.

15. As a Christian, I couldn't agree with you more.
It's mass cult brainwashing, no doubt about it. Just as they co-opted patriotism to themselves (wrongly of course), they have co-opted Christianity. Both equally false. This is a problem that has to be won in the marketplace of ideas, and it's time Dems showed up there, especially believing Dems.

This is all a corruption of our values - it's what their Religious Right power brokers are good at. At the very top, their leaders don't even believe - I've known some of them, and they admitted that.

Consider this interesting quote from 2500 years ago...

"For he says, 'By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man:

And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathers eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped'."
(Isaiah 10:13-14)

That's what these Religious Right leaders remind me of, in cahoots with their Roves and Gramms. They gather votes together, to enable the corporatism. "Removed the bounds", as in deregulation? Interesting, isn't it?

18. Who else thought God was on their side?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Nazi SS uniforms said "God is with us".
The fact remains that God is not a republican or a democrat and that these people need to quit making false claims. When Obama wins this election, are they going to think God has foresaken them? I suppose they will think it's a cue that the end of days has arrived. lol.

19. Bishop Tutu preached that God was on the anti-apartheid side
so I'm not sure how you separate the good "god is on our side" from the bad.
