Stevens Convicted, says he'll stay in Senate race
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 09:23 PM by spanone
WASHINGTON - A defiant Sen. Ted Stevens, convicted of corruption charges, said Monday he will fight the verdict "with every ounce of energy I have." He added he will not give up his bid for re-election.

"I am innocent," the Alaska Republican said in a statement that indicated he will appeal. "This verdict is the result of the unconscionable manner in which the Justice Department lawyers conducted this trial. I ask that Alaskans and my Senate colleagues stand with me as I pursue my rights. I remain a candidate for the United States Senate."

A jury on Monday found Stevens guilty of seven corruption charges, throwing into limbo the 40-year career of Alaska's political patriarch.

1. YES! Pull a Larry Craig on 'em Ted.....A walking, talking, convicted criminal running for office.
The Republican brand name is right up there with Enron on the respectability list.

10. Diaper Dave Vitter, Larry Craig, Ted Stevens
The Republicans in the Senate are beginning to look like a rogues gallery of law breakers. Diaper Dave was lucky that his crimes were discovered after the statute of limitations had run.

2.  E-mail from Alaska Democratic Party: Stevens should resign
Democrats: Stevens should resign

E-mail from Alaska Democratic Party:

STATEMENT FROM THE ALASKA DEMOCRATIC PARTY ON THE CONVICTION OF SENATOR TED STEVENS

Anchorage, Alaska – The Alaska Democratic Party released the following statement on the seven felony count conviction of Senator Ted Stevens:

“Senator Stevens' felony convictions are very serious and he should immediately resign from the United States Senate. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he did it anyway and lied to Alaskans about it. Alaskans deserve better from their public officials. It’s time for us to elect an ethical and honest Senator who will move this state forward.”

-- Patti Higgins, Chair of the Alaska Democratic Party
