7. Store owner: Plot to steal gun for assassination 'crazy'

It's not been a good year for Roy Mitchell.


A February tornado destroyed the volunteer fire station he captains and damaged his store on Christmasville Road.

Last week, local authorities told him that a couple of white supremacists arrested in Crockett County had planned to rob Mitchell's Country Store.

Today, he found out why.

Mitchell, 51, said "crazy" was his only reaction to the plan to steal a high-powered rifle from his store to try to assassinate black Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, and Paul Schlesselman, 18, of West Helena, Ark., were arrested during an attempted residential burglary. Details of their plan to rob Mitchell's store and attempt to kill Obama as the climax of a multi-state killing spree were revealed in court documents released today.

According to a complaint on file in U.S. District Court, Cowart took photos and drew a diagram of the store while planning the theft of the possible assassination weapon.
