It's not that you stand up to them that makes them respect you, it's that you somehow best them in their mind. When I was a kid I was a tomboy and could outrun, outclimb, outswim and generally outsmart the bullies. And on occasion I smacked them for being bullies towards others. After that they couldn't be more buddy-buddy with me. They like that kind of interaction because they understand it in their simpleton minds.
