Actually, I do have some sympathy for this woman (it's there somewhere, mixed in with the anger I feel toward her). She seems to have serious problems and I wish her well in getting treatment.

I think she has worked hard for McCain, sees the election being lost day by day, is emotionally devastated by that and is feeling wounded -- so she created a wound that people can see. She wants sympathy. And, hey, if she can also turn the incident into a slam against Obama, all the better (in her mind). I think she's pathetic.
