or condescending. I am trying to reconcile with an old friend that I lost over arguments about bush*, whether dinosaurs exists (actually she said " I'm not sure I believe in Dinosaurs anymore" and whether "she failed me as a friend, because I will go to hell".. I would like to rectify things but also don't want her to forget who I am and where I stand. I also want to know where she stands now.

Here is the start of the letter. Please be honest.

"Hey girl, Sorry I missed the birthday party. I'm not much up for them. I have another friend that invited me to her some 2 yr party also to no avail. I know its rude but, I made it to the important first child's first party, so I get some credit. So, how else are things. I don't. know if I told you but I am out on disability. I would certainly love to visit with you. But, I have not changed. If so, even more towards the left(politically) and more away from what you believe (religiously). I just say these things not to start a fight. I say them because I am honest and I love you. I would love to have a friendship again, but it will be hard to with every even touching on these ominous but extremely important subjects. I am fully supporting Barack Obama."
(vote obama is my sig line not added for goading reasons)

VOTE OBAMA-BIDEN NOV 4TH!

1. Say goodnight, Gracie!
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 05:39 AM by Uben
You can kiss that one goodbye! Depends on you intentions, but I'd say that letter will get you nowhere. I'd just lie, kiss up, get some, then leave. You know, the typical "man/pig" thing!

3. In that case........
.......put friendship above politics. Life is too short to lose friends over politics. Just tell her politics is much less important than friendships, and agree to not bring them up. I live in republican hell amongst millionaires and republican political junkies. I don't talk politics with republican friends here. I just unload on the ones I dislike!

4. It doesn't sound like you fully understand the term "best friend"
If you did, you wouldn't have seeped into your political belief system, which she surely must know by this time.

Let it go and go be a friend to someone else.

5. Yes
We USED to be able to debate and discuss and disagree on just about everything. Until Bush and the dinosaur thing. I still love her though.

12. What's that saying?
If you love someone, let them go... if it was meant to be (a friendship) they'll come back, or something like that.

Meanwhile, we're all gonna be suffering from the effects of Republicans starting with Ronald Reagan and ad nauseam.

14. she has come back. She initiated the contact.
I just don't know if I can go along and pretend. Politics are part of me and who I am. I was much less into in when we were friends. But that 2nd vote for W, and with no apparent explanation. Killed us. I guess as they say it is not my business I suppose. But just look what those "ahh its none of my business votes have done"

7. No politician of any stripe
is worth the loss of a good friend.

Barack will probably turn out to be a good President, but I promise you even he is not worth such a loss. In an environment like this, it's too easy to lose perspective. Too many people today think political leanings are the be-all and end-all.

If you truly love your friend, don't lose another minute on politics.

In answer to your OP question, no the letter isn't rude, but counterproductive to your goal (Of saving your friendship).

13. Did she really tell you that you will go to hell?
I would have trouble being friends with somebody who tells me that I'm going to hell because of my political beliefs. There would be no trust there. I mean, one's soul and the after life are kind of fundamental.

I could ignore comments about dinosaurs and even somebody supporting McCain but I could not ignore the comment about hell. That's just me.

17. Are you saying 'to no avail' because you didn't get the answer you wanted?
Because you had a lot of responses in there. This is disingenuous to repost it here.
