FEMA says people living in tents by CHOICE
This is getting interesting- even Perry is critical of the Bush administration's reponse to Ike. Not that you'll hear the first thing about Ike in the national media, not to mention the 130 or so people still missing. But at least the locals are skewering the feds. And for those not familiar, the Chambers County Judge mentioned in the article is also a republican.

FEMA maligns homeless post-Ike, local officials say

A statement from FEMA Wednesday - that some Hurricane Ike victims have rejected housing offers and are choos-ing to live in tents - was met with frustration and ire from local officials.

"That is a lie. That is incorrect," said Orange County Judge Carl Thibodeaux, who was not present for the statement and was interviewed by phone afterward.

Hurricane Ike's Sept. 13 landfall left thousands of Southeast Texas homes destroyed or unlivable.

Thibodeaux said Orange County alone asked FEMA four weeks ago for 4,000 mobile homes for displaced residents.

As of Wednesday, 116 FEMA mobile homes were occupied in the county, leaving thousands of residents staying with friends or relatives, and in many cases, living on their property in tents and cars.

"Those people are staying there because they don't have a choice," Thibodeaux said. "There are no available hotels here. There are no apartments here."

2. Formaldehyde Eventually Makes an Appearance
That's what folks down here call it, anyway. And unfortunately the good people of Iowa seem to be learning that as well, from what I understand.

3. Seems Like a Good Reason to Prefer a Tent
This is what we use at Burning Man. It is a 20 foot dome that takes 30 minutes to put up.
The whole thing weighs about 70 pounds.

FEMA could get 20 or 30 of these for what they paid for one formaldehyde-contaminated trailer,

5. Yeah, the Bush FEMA is a screwup. FEMA under Clinton worked well.
It will work well again under President Obama.

4. What-Ever
Instead of "choosing" tents, maby FEMA could help them choose a mobile home (that's just sitting around rotting away).
