Why did McCain go out on David Letterman’s show with that big ass hole in the bottom of his shoe?

I didn't see any holes. I did see the bottoms of his shoes and it looked to me like it was where the nice pretty sole was worn a little, but definitely not holey. If those shoes had holes, it was because they were just another prop.
