LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tony-winning actress Edie Adams, a blond chanteuse with a funny streak who was married to the late comedian Ernie Kovacs, has died. She was 81.

Adams, who starred in the movies "The Apartment" and "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World," died on Wednesday in Los Angeles after battling cancer and pneumonia, her spokesman, Henri Bollinger, said in a statement.

In the 1950s and 60s, Adams rose to fame as a sexpot spokeswoman for Muriel cigars, with the catchphrase "Why don't you pick one up and smoke it sometime?"

Adams won a Tony Award in the 1950s for her role as Daisy Mae in the Broadway version of the comic strip "Li'l Abner."

2. An incredible woman. RIP.
Not only did she work to preserve her husband's legacy, she paid off all the debts he left behind when he died...more than a half million dollars. Took her years to work that off.

5. Cigars, cigarettes, tiparillos?
I remember her from when I was child. My family were fans of Ernie Kovacs and we all like Edie Adams as well.

R.I.P., Edie.

Edie Adams was a very funny lady who could handle dramamtic roles as well. Tonight on NBC News, Brian Williams showed a clip of her singing "That's All" on the final episode of "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour". Lucy and the cast broke down crying.

13. When I met her, she was married to someone else ... a musician.
Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 06:35 PM by LiberalHeart
I can't remember the name, but think it was something like Cardova (?). I probably have that name way wrong.

Edit: I just found who she was married to then: Pete Candoli.

Was "...pick one up and smoke it sometime?" supposed to be a double-entendre?

15. Very sad.
Another object of my youthful (and not so youthful) desires is gone.

Maybe she's back with Ernie now... if so, that would be good.

17. I know what you mean.
I never had much use for television, but I would watch it at my Grandparents' house. Sitting there and hoping she would walk into the screen.

Man, I thought she was red hot.

23. Tbings were kind of rocky even before Ernie died
He was an inveterate gambler who liked the high life, spending every nickel he made. When he died suddenly she could have filed for bankruptcy, but insisted on working to pay all Ernie's debts.

She and Ernie also spent years tracking down his two daughters who were kidnapped by his non-custodial ex-wife. They were finally located by detectives, re-abducted, and Edie raised them.
