KKK Delivers Flyers -- Via Unsuspecting Newspaper

Published: October 15, 2008 2:15 PM ET

ADA, Okla.-- Ada police are investigating how flyers for a white supremacist group ended up wrapped around delivered copies of the local newspaper.

Several subscribers to the Ada Evening News reported receiving a newsletter from the Ku Klux Klan wrapped around their local papers over the weekend.

Loné Beasley, the newspaper's publisher, said the paper was not aware of the group's activities and said it was done without the newspaper's permission.

"This is totally unauthorized activity," Beasley said. "The AEN does not in any way endorse Ku Klux Klan ideology. They have the right to distribute their message as Americans under Freedom of Speech, but they are not authorized to do so through the Ada Evening News."

The newspaper also said contract employees who deliver the papers were not responsible.

Ada police are investigating and urged residents to call police if they spot suspicious vehicles after papers are delivered.

"We are investigating this and finding out what charges can be pursued," Ada Assistant Police Chief Carl Allen said. "We will get to the bottom of this."

2. I think in someways shit like this will help us.
I would say that the MAJORITY of Americans have had underlying racist sentiments at times - to varying degrees. But only the lowest of the low would feel ok with sharing commonground with the Klan. Often when people make that connection between their unspoken biases and the viewpoint of the Klan, it shakes them. Wakes them up. And has the potential to facilitate them shifting their viewpoint. Because, my God, who on this earth would feel ok AGREEING with the Klan?

I'll give you an example. My grandmother is in her 80s. Life long Virginian and Southern Baptist. I wouldn't say she "hates" other races, but she frequently says ignorant or sterotypical statements about blacks, hispanics, and muslims in particular. However, she believes that groups like the Klan are evil and wrong. When I've occasionally pointed (in a very gentle way - it is my grandmother afterall) an opinion of hers is also shared by the Klan, it stops her in her tracks. You see the wheels turning. That's not something she wants to be associated with and the similarities of view points disturbed her.

4. I agree. I think it's best for it to be blatantly out in the open....
as Palin's presence has encouraged, rather than hiding it. That's when it's most dangerous.

I'm calling it out every single time. People need to see it in all its ugliness, especially when they weren't aware that's what was at the heart of why they are uncomfortable with Obama.

Amazingly, many people aren't aware of racist tendencies (peoples of all color, btw). But it's the ones who are PROUD to be racist and hiding it (even though they want to shout it from the rooftops) who are taking up most of my time now.

8. The ones that are proud of it cannot be changed.
At least not by you or I. Don't waste your time on those fuckers. They embraced bigotry long ago and will never, ever, ever vote for Obama for any reason. I'd hate to see you or anyone banging your head against the wall for these jackasses.

I think where we can make a difference is by trying to enlighten those DECENT people that have bad ideas. These poor fools are living in a cesspool of intellectual laziness. These are the same people that only respond to simple talking points instead of complex reasoning. They believe stereotypes because it's easier than thinking for themselves, observing the world around them, and forming their own opinions. But if we can lift these people up out of their intellectual laziness, even for only a few minutes, get them to rub the sleep from their eyes, and make them question WHY they believe what they believe... THEN we can see change occur.

I think a lot of people have been discouraged by the racism and xenophobia we've seen during the course of the campaign. But I think they're looking at it the wrong way. Yes this exists and it always will to some degree, but it's prevalence is much much much less than many anticipated it would be. (I think a lot of people were fearing the worst when it was realized that the race would come down to the 1/2 black Barack Hussein Obama vs. the nearly albino war hero in McCain.) And it's much much much less prevalent than we would have seen if Obama had run 12, 8, or even 4 years ago.

But just because it's getting better doesn't mean we can let up either. Progress is slow and change comes hard. But we are getting there... there is evidence of that all around us. I'm more hopeful than ever. And we will be living in a whole new world under President Obama. I can't wait.

9. Oh, I'm not trying to change them...I agree, that's hopeless. What...
I AM attempting to do is to show the others who AREN'T like that, that it's racism that is lying at the heart of the bullshit emails making the rounds and lying at the heart of "he makes me uncomfortable."

Some people believe the scary muslim stuff without knowing what's really at the root of it; granted, they are usually the type of people who assume anything coming through email means it's true, which is problematic in and of itself, but still...exposing the racism is helping.

:)

5. I live in Tulsa, and this has happened before
Apparently close to where I live is a "large" white supremacist group, but I happened to do my senior research paper in high school on hate groups, and I remember them as being the fat, lazy bubbas who like to go shoot beer cans in the woods and hope to get in on the tail end of any coming race wars so they're not technically the Klan, but they could be associated with them. They actually sent me literature after I had a letter to the editor appear in the Tulsa World in which I corrected one of our former senators on his claim that Ruby Ridge happened under Clinton. I got a nice copy of their quarterly newsletter with a few things written in the margin (mostly calling me names) and a flier telling me that the white woman is the most endangered species on the planet.
