John McCain actively campaigned for George Wallace Jr.

Senator McCain, You Endorsed A Potential White Supremacist for Lieutenant Governor Of Alabama. Does This Make You A Racist?

October 15, 2008, 6:34PM

This may be old news to some, but I just found out about it, so it's new to me. Let's see how many parallels this story has to the alleged Obama/Ayers link:

In the 2006 Alabama Republican Party primaries, John McCain actively campaigned for George Wallace Jr., the son of that one angry dude back in the 60s, when he was running for Lieutenant Governor Now, assuming Wallace doesn't espouse the same views as his father....oh, wait a second...maybe he does... (http://www.truthout.org/article/mccain-campaigns-george-wallace-jr)

McCain's Alabama visit drew fire from the Democratic National Committee, which said McCain should have denounced past speeches Wallace has made to the "racist Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC)," a group which opposes "all efforts to mix the races" and advocates U.S. withdrawal from such organizations as the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund.

Don't believe me? See their website (http://cofcc.org/) If you bother to look, you'll find all sorts of goodies about racial integrity and states' rights. They're still ticked that Obama hasn't released his birth records yet. Only, um, he has.

Wallace has given plenty of speeches to the CCC in the past, and has claimed that there "is nothing hateful about those people I've seen . . ." (http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/archives/2005/11/mccain_and_geor.html)

Oh, there's this too:

The Birmingham News reported that in remarks at the reception, McCain praised Wallace as "a good and decent American" who wants to reform Alabama education and broaden the Republican Party's base.

1. Wally says he doesn't research all groups to whom he speaks. For all we know,
he has spoken to NAMBLA.

5. Americans deserve better
from the Truthout article: http://www.truthout.org/article/mccain-campaigns-george-wallace-jr

DNC press secretary Josh Earnest said McCain's endorsement of Wallace without denouncing his "connection" with the CCC was on a par with President Bush's appearance at South Carolina's ultra conservative Bob Jones University during the 2000 presidential primary campaign, when Bush and McCain were opponents.

"Americans deserve better than Republican politicians with presidential ambitions who pander to racist organizations and their apologists," Earnest said.

4. the question begs
. . . why did McCain travel to Alabama in 2006 just to support this guy? What else is McCain hiding about his past? This would be baffling, if it were not for the typically bigoted direction his campaign has taken against his black Democratic rival.

21.  George Wallace (the original segregationist Guv) made a 180° turn
in his thinking and was lauded in his later days as a supporter of integration. He appointed many blacks to cabinet positions in his last administration.

Don't know anything about the other George Wallaces.
