Bernanke says U.S. economy facing big threat

NEW YORK - Turmoil in credit markets poses a “significant threat” to the the U.S. economy, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday, suggesting an openness to further interest-rate cuts.

Bernanke said it will take some time to restore normal credit flows and pledged the U.S. central bank would continue to act aggressively to fight the crisis. Importantly, he said inflation risks were ebbing, which suggests Fed officials see latitude to lower borrowing costs.

“By restricting flows of credit to households, businesses, and state and local governments, the turmoil in financial markets and the funding pressures on financial firms pose a significant threat to economic growth,” Bernanke said.

“We will continue to use all the tools at our disposal to improve market functioning and liquidity,” he said, adding that policy-makers’ aggressive and quick response crucially distinguished this episode with the crisis of the 1930s.

Of their respective positions? Besides the fact that idiot boy Bernanke is stating the oh so obvious, he apparently doesn't even know the fundamental basics of his position. Cutting interest rates, along with this bailout, and our debt, and so much more is all putting some heavy duty upward pressure on inflation. Yes, part of the problem in the past year or two has been the rise in the price of energy, but the other part is due to simple economic basics.

Not only is Bush a blissful idiot, he's surrounded himself with blissful idiots. It will be a nice change to have somebody intelligent in charge again.
