Frank Rich nails it
All’s fair in politics. John McCain and Sarah Palin have every right to bring up William Ayers, even if his connection to Obama is minor, even if Ayers’s Weather Underground history dates back to Obama’s childhood, even if establishment Republicans and Democrats alike have collaborated with the present-day Ayers in educational reform. But it’s not just the old Joe McCarthyesque guilt-by-association game, however spurious, that’s going on here. Don’t for an instant believe the many mindlessly “even-handed” journalists who keep saying that the McCain campaign’s use of Ayers is the moral or political equivalent of the Obama campaign’s hammering on Charles Keating.

What makes them different, and what has pumped up the Weimar-like rage at McCain-Palin rallies, is the violent escalation in rhetoric, especially (though not exclusively) by Palin. Obama “launched his political career in the living room of a domestic terrorist.” He is “palling around with terrorists” (note the plural noun). Obama is “not a man who sees America the way you and I see America.” Wielding a wildly out-of-context Obama quote, Palin slurs him as an enemy of American troops.

By the time McCain asks the crowd “Who is the real Barack Obama?” it’s no surprise that someone cries out “Terrorist!” The rhetorical conflation of Obama with terrorism is complete. It is stoked further by the repeated invocation of Obama’s middle name by surrogates introducing McCain and Palin at these rallies. This sleight of hand at once synchronizes with the poisonous Obama-is-a-Muslim e-mail blasts and shifts the brand of terrorism from Ayers’s Vietnam-era variety to the radical Islamic threats of today.

2. Republicans love to Demonstrate how stupid their followers truly are.
To follow that logic one has to be a quite dim bulb with zero critical thinking skills.

3. Republican spells R-E-T-A-R-D (I have that on cardboard in my car)
when I see a McLame bumper sticker or Bush Cheney 04 sticker I put the sign up as I pass.

That sign would offend far more than just Republicans however.

6. Of course, like the plastic keys we weren't allowed to shake at the Democratic Convention
and a myriad of other 'things' we're just too good and purer than thou to do, and don't want to be anything but good little repressed Democlones.

Bullshit.

13. At this point we have the support to get the votes. Maybe the rest of them should be insulted. (nt)

5. Frank had me wondering whether Palin was giving a shout
out to neo-Nazis with that Pegler quote in her convention speech. Didn't Timothy McVeigh love Pegler?

Sarah has lots of terrorist friends.

No surprise. I hope KO and Rachel raise it tomorrow.

Another point not being discussed in the M$Greedia is that the Rethug mob have simply swallowed the made up talking points sent out by Rethugs via email.

add.

9. In a case like this, it would be wise of Obama's team to determine if there's a money trail.
I'd bet they were paid by McLame's people. Send in some watchdogs to these rallies to determine who are shouting out these convenient, contrived "answers" to McLame's "question" & investigate.

11. Ah yes, the "Brooks Bros" mob. Every last one of them deserves to be horse-whipped
in public and then have salt rubbed into their wounds. They--almost as much as the felonious five on the Supreme Court--helped bury Democracy in Selection 2000. Remember those names, remember those faces. They stopped the vote count in Florida. They beat on doors, they pounded on windows, they intimidated courthouse workers counting ballots. They did whatever they could to halt LEGITIMATE AND LEGAL ballot counting. That was their mission. They are a big fucking part of how cheney*/bush* were allowed to plunder and pillage this country for the last eight years. Remember them well.

14. Dude, you crack me up!!!

I agree, though. McCain will obviously be done; Palin needs to have NO spot in the national spotlight other than periodic Tina Fey appearances on SNL after Nov 4th.

17. Once again the MEDIA is indicted for not making clear distinctions: Ayers/Keating are NOT comparable
By playing the comparison, by forwarding the notion that one is JUST AS valid as the other, or that one is JUST AS vicious as the other....they are doing McRove's work for him and are accomplices to the politics that is DIVIDING this country.

When will the Media be held accountable?
