And this works every time because not enough of us in the sane, anti-bigotry community speak up.....How many people fired off an email or letter or phone call to McDonalds offering support and telling them not to yield to these bigots?

:argh:

AFA ends boycott: McDonald's agrees to changes

October 9, 2008

McDonald's has told AFA they will remain neutral in the culture war regarding homosexual marriage. AFA is ending the boycott of McDonald's. As you know, AFA called for the boycott in May after McDonald's joined the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC).

McDonald's said McDonald's Vice President Richard Ellis has resigned his position on the board of NGLCC and that his seat on the board will not be replaced. McDonald's also said that the company has no plans to renew their membership in NGLCC when it expires in December.

In an e-mail to McDonald's franchised owners the company said, "It is our policy to not be involved in political and social issues. McDonald's remains neutral on same sex marriage or any 'homosexual agenda' as defined by the American Family Association."

We appreciate the decision by McDonald's to no longer support political activity by homosexual activist organizations. You might want to thank your local McDonald's manager.

1. I am preparing a letter to local francise owners and the corporate regional director
This letter will say, in effect: McDonalds' has chosen to cave in to a far right wing hate group. That is not "remaining neutral," that is facilitation to engage in hate crimes. And I will never, ever do business with corporations that facilitate to engage in hate crimes.

You have ended one boycott. Expect another, much larger one.

3. At risk of being flamed for being pessimistic
Do you think McDonald's cares? No.
McDonald's only cares about McDonald's.
If it's a possible controversy, they'll bolt like an untrained horse.

Also, you have to take into consideration that that McDonald's franchisees only have very loose connections to McDonald's corporate. All of my local McDonald's are franchisees. They don't participate in any of the corporate national promotions, they set their own pricing (a Big Mac at our McD's is a buck fifty more than a corporate store over the river in Virginia Beach), they don't have to participate in McDonald's corporate social programs (including Ronald McDonald House). Basically they pay a fee to operate the McDonald's name and menu and get to do whatever they want afterward.

The way this sounds, it sounds as though franchisees pitched a fit and McDonald's caved to them since McD's generates a ton of revenue from franchise fees.

4. Good points but irrelevant
If people do not write in and complain, the corporation will find it easier to cave in the next time. Whether or not they listen, we still must speak out.
