(New York City) Nine in ten LGBT teens have been verbally harassed in the past school year, and almost half have been physically harassed because of their sexual orientation a new study shows.

In addition, about a third skipped a day of school in the past month because of feeling unsafe.

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s National School Climate Survey involved 6,209 LGBT students between the ages of 13 and 21 from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

GLSEN has conducted the survey biennially since 1999 and is the only national survey to document the experiences of students who identify as LGBT in America’s secondary schools.

The new survey found that three-quarters of LGBT teens hear slurs such as “faggot” or “dyke” frequently or often at school, and nine in 10 reports hearing anti-LGBT language frequently or often.

2. You have no idea what it's like at my school
I'm not gay, but just among my friends, although I constantly remind them how wrong it is, they always joke and make fun of the LGBT teens at my school. It's crazy, and unfortunately the meme that it's wrong has been perpetuated so much that it's almost commonplace TO make fun of them, which is just terrible.

Similarly, there's the problem of teens saying something is "gay" which implies it a negative connotation. Unfortunately, that's not helping the problem, but only making it so much worse.

3. I have been getting an earful at my school lately
and much of it isn't too great. I am ready to confront one teacher at my school over his inappropriate comments. It is sometimes too easy to forget that despite all of the changes that have happened things are still far from terrific.

4. I was beaten by 20 members of my class and the teachers knew it was going to happen.

I was gay-bashed repeatedly and i grew up hetero.

There is MORE homophobia in schools than in general society.

My proof? I was never gay-bashed after highschool. Not once in 15 years.

and also i have been slowly getting my revenge over the years against that small town.

By last count i have cost them nearly $480,000 in lost revenue and denied grants. I have also assisted many of their best artists in leaving town. Even to the point of finding them apartments and jobs.

I went back a few years ago and it seems that they did me a favor. The unfortunate ones were those that didn't leave.

7. nothing like revenge I guess
I recently went to my 20th reunion all loaded for bear so to speak. Instead I was strangely at peace. LIke you I live many miles away from where I grew up. It took distance in my case to get confidence.
