I just finished reading an email that left my blood boiling. In the game of politics I have heard some pretty disgusting and foul things, that is part and parcel of the world. This, however, really pissed me off. It seems that Michael Savage, that bastion of journalistic integrity, is smearing Beau Biden and JAG prosecutors in general.
Later in the broadcast, Savage stated that Beau Biden, attorney general of Delaware and son of Sen. Joe Biden, is "going to be a trial lawyer in Iraq. The very same kind of wonderful trial lawyers who were skewering the Marines left and right in the, in Iraq, that's the kind of trial lawyer that they're sending over." Savage then read a CNN.com article, saying, "Beau Biden -- a captain in the National Guard and Delaware's attorney general -- will be a trial lawyer in the 261st Signal Brigade." The CNN article also reported that Delaware National Guard Lt. Col. Len Grattieri "couldn't say where Beau Biden will be based, but his role will be that of a prosecutor enforcing the Uniform Code of Military Justice." Savage went on to say: "hey're going to see if they can burn any of the military men over there, and they'll use Biden's son to see if they can put them in jail. Wonderful. Terrific. What would you expect from a Democrat going to Iraq?"
From 2000 - 2002, I served as a CID investigator at Fort Hood, Texas (6th MP Group CID). It was my pleasure and honor to work on a daily basis with JAG prosecutors, and they were some of the finest soldiers I ever had the honor of knowing. For those who are not familiar with the military criminal justice system, the US Army Criminal Investigations Division is charged with investigating felony crimes related to the military. These include drug trafficking, rape, murder, robbery, computer crimes, economic crimes, etc. Anything that would land you in Leavenworth for a few years or more falls under the purview of CID. But the investigator's job is just the beginning.
The individual arrested for the commission of these crimes is then turned over to the JAG prosecutor. It is his job to follow through, make the case, follow up and see that justice prevails. It is a difficult, thankless job. JAG soldiers put in tireless hours checking every detail. Comments like this from Michael Savage leave me visibly shaking with anger. Soldiers are not above the law. That is why we have a JAG, and an MP corps. At the same time, soldiers need justice for crimes committed against them. Rape a soldier? Face the JAG. Steal from a soldier? Face the JAG. Hurt a soldier? Face the JAG.
What Savage is suggesting is complete anarchy. According to him, soldiers should be allowed to do whatever, and should have no recourse of they are the victim. Savage's comments sound much like what I've heard criminals say in interview rooms many times before. I'm gonna end this article now, before I say what I really think.
