Fears over electronic cigarettes
Fears are being raised about the boom in sales in the UK of so-called electronic cigarettes.

The cigarettes use replaceable cartridges with shots of nicotine, but have become popular because they are not covered by the smoking ban.

While the products do not contain tar, tobacco or carbon monoxide, experts are worried as users inhale a fine heated mist and there is a lack of regulation.

But retailers said they were healthier than normal cigarettes.

Have you got them over there too ?

1. I have never heard of it.
Is it like a little vaporizer?

2. We have smokeless cannabis pipes here
I've never heard of the device described in the article.

Many years ago there were some nicotine delivery devices that were shaped like cigarettes, but worked simply by the user drawing air through them. I'm not sure what became of them.

3. Smokeless nicotine "tubes" are still sold
to people wanting to stop smoking...
very expensive in my opinion, but I don't smoke, so have no idea of cost of cigs now days.

12. these are very similar in appearance to the unpowered tubes
but they do vaporize a small portion of tobacco (or some synthesized nicotine vehicle) for inhalation. Always seemed gimmicky to me, but then gimmicky sells in the quitting biz. Just look at those lozenges with the "pop pack." That pack costs more than the lozenges by a long shot, but "studies" have shown that the sensation of the "pop" on opening it replicates a portion of the real smoking experience, so they're on the market.

14. I think the best strategy on tobacco is not to start using it
I tried it, even occasionally bought expensive cigarettes and cigars when I was a teenager; but for some reason the habit never caught on.

4. Damn. They sound very tempting.
I'm sure I'd manage to get hooked on them, though. I quite smoking six years ago and I still have smoking dreams.

7. I don't know whether this will cheer or bum you, but my smoking dreams finally
went away after about 15 years.

5. "I haven't heard of them before. Intriguing. Is there a total ban in the UK of smoking in
public places now? I was there 4 years ago and surprised that smoking rules were much more lax than where I live in the US.

No sign of that either. Pubs do deals with local councils. My local had to remove two of the foiur large parasols in the garden. The parasols are fitted with outdoor heaters.

Hadn't noticed it was you. :hi: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ6VT7ciR1o I wonder if Palin thinks she's Dorothy with her red shoes.

10. I feel obliged to confess
I've got a Shirley CD with all of the good numbers on it. I subject my dance friends to it sometimes when we're out in the car and they are effectively trapped. I don't turn it off until they can singalong to Animal Crackers. :)
