Iceland is saved! Russia greeted as liberators!

By Omar Valdimarsson and Keith Weir 46 minutes ago

REYKJAVIK/LONDON (Reuters) - Russia negotiated an emergency bailout for Iceland and unveiled an aid package for its own banks on Tuesday, while Japan called for greater coordination in tackling the global financial crisis.

.....

Home to 300,000 people in the North Atlantic, Iceland has said it faces the threat of national bankruptcy after a rapid expansion in international financial services in recent years.

Using emergency powers adopted on Monday, Iceland dismissed the board of Landsbanki, putting its second largest bank into receivership.

Iceland also propped up its battered currency and said it planned to send a delegation to Russia to agree a 4 billion euro ($5.44 billion) loan to help it through the storm.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced an extra 950 billion roubles ($36.4 billion) of new credit for banks at an emergency Kremlin meeting after Russian stocks suffered their worst pounding ever the previous day.

Medvedev said that most of the money, which is offered over five years, would be channeled through the biggest two state- controlled banks, Sberbank and VTB

8. No
I think she only responds to when Putin rears his head. I don't think she knows who Medvedev is and her head would probably explode if she had to pronounce his name.

9. HAHAHAHA
I´ll make sure to post here and have a laugh when your country goes over the brink.
Im watching friends and family not coping with their mortgage and possibly losing their savings, why you find that at all funny is beyond me ,although it just goes to show how absolutely oblivious the USA seems to be about anything but their own stupid, religilous, self righteous, democracy spreading, murderous ass!

And to think that I follow your election and this site because Im genuinely concerned about the way the US has been corrupted

Sorry for the language but Fuck you!

11. I'm not laughing at your country, I'm laughing at the neo cons

we americans haven't been able to stop the neo cons for 7 yrs. BUT!

Russia stopped them in Georgia
Russia stopped them from harassing Venezuela
and now Russia beats the neo cons to Iceland to help you all out. (the neo cons would have robbed you while they pretended to help you)

3 to 0

I´m sorry , I´m a bit testy today.

Its not the first post I have seen today where people are focusing on coming up with some snappy Ice references and ignoring the peoples plight...pissed me off, thats all.

20. Yes Im in Iceland
I dont know what to tell you , people are scared.

Im not too happy that we need a loan from the Russians, not everyone agrees on that .
Although a loan from Norway seems like a possibility at the moment.
Lots of people want to blame the executives and bankers for their irresponsibility.

Obviously some people feel that the USA with its policies has finally managed to fuck up the whole system, personally i dont have the knowledge to come to that conclusion.

Some people say that the Icelandic situation is like the canary in the coalmine for the rest of the world, if thats correct then we are all in deep shit.

22. Welcome to DU
No one thinks what is happening to Iceland is funny. At least I don't think it's funny. Yes, I agree with you that USA has been stupid, religious nuts, lying, war-mongers. We are hoping that it will change when Obama is in charge. Peace to you and welcome. :hi:

17. Yep. So Russia will not be able to use it as a military base
But since the US has deserted the naval base on the island it would suit the Kremlin to be able to use it for, say, refueling and maintenance. Having use of such a facility only a few hours flying time from North America would be a major Russian propaganda coup and cause consternation in Washington.

23. Just why did we close the base at Kevlavik?
It didn't save us much money, and Iceland had been one of our closest allies for decades.
