GOP 'about to open a can of whoop ass on Obama with focus on his personal associations'
To wit: the Washington Post reports that Sen. John McCain's campaign -- convinced that the maverick thing alone isn't working -- is about to open up a can of whoop-ass on Obama with a focus on his personal associations.

"We're going to get a little tougher," a senior Republican operative tells the Post. "We've got to question this guy's associations. Very soon. There's no question that we have to change the subject here."

Fasten your seatbelts!

29. Obama should say Tuesday night
(in reference to the line in the WP article) "John your campaign manager said that you want to stear the national discussions away from the economy and start attacking me personally? Why don't you want to talk about the economy and the hundreds of thousands of jobs lost in the past few years?"

3. This will be the Hannity schtick of Ayers/Wright for 24-7
That's all he ever talks about. It's gotten all the traction it's gonna get for his crowd.

McCain has a lot of crummier associations.

I'd like to see McCain hit with recent stuff of his own - like burying all the Abramhoff documents. Like how everyone in his campaign is a lobbyist.

The whole Rezco, Weatherman Underground nonsense has been thoroughly debunked ....

Meaningless associations that common citizens have already dismissed ... the only converts are those who have already gotten wasted on the Kool Aid ....

38. Raffaello Follieri
http://defamer.com/5048629/when-raffaello-met-mccain-a-story-in-words-and-pictures

Follieri is best known as Anne Hathaway's ex boyfriend, but he's considered an A-list con man. He convinced some deep-pocketed investors that his company had insider connections to the Vatican and promised to use those connections to land sweetheart deals on church property up for sale in the United States.

This is who McCain chose to spend his 70th birthday with. Odd that he chose to spend his bday with a con man instead of with his family like normal people. Here he is boarding a yacht Follieri rented for the occasion:

10. Barbara Bush is starting to sing already. Its over for the "hero".
And what a great way to flame out--rather than take the low road, he's gonna bury himself in the quicksand. And the Republican brand? They ran into the sand before the "Maverick."

30. If you were a Maverick, wouldn't that be self evident? Would you have to
keep reminding people that you are a Maverick?

Maybe it could be said that he is too crazy to follow the rules, but is deluding himself into thinking that he is some romantic figure, a maverick.

16. They already have. Anybody watch Diane Sawyer on 20/20 last night?
They regurgitated the Rev. Wright thing, and went into minute detail about the Weathermen and Tony Rezko while they skipped right over anything in McCain's background.

They found the ugliest picture of Wright possible--where he looked angy, no, crazed. While we know Palin's religious associations would put Obama's to shame.

25. More hypocrisy & desperation
Only "losers" take the "low road" and hopefully enough people see it as such, especially if Obama responds by pointing out that McCain and Palin (she REALLY is in no position to talk) pointing out "personal associations" doesn't create jobs or solve problems (and there are certainly plenty of them).
Also, taking the "low road" (which McCain incidentally has professed to abhor in the past) does NOTHING post-election to help both parties work together as McCain & Palin both claim to want to do. People should know plenty about the Republican's desire to "reach across the aisle" to work with the opposing party. "Uniter not a divider" ring a bell with anybody?
Of course, as has already been pointed out, McCain and Palin have plenty of "skeletons" in their own closets so they better be careful. So far Obama has shown that he's not willing to take any "guff" from McCain & Palin and, particularly after 2004, the Democratic party shouldn't be afraid to unload a Can O' Whoop Ass on McCain and Palin either.

36. I wish it were the case that he has been innoculated against this, but I doubt that is true.
The ads will be nasty and very psychologically adroit, per the Repukes' long-time experience in this. And they are going to turn some people against Obama.

The counterpunch from Obama will HAVE TO BE to let the 527's go hog wild on McAnus. He is a ripe target and they would rip him to shreds if the ads were run in the right places and times. Without them, McAnus will be portrayed as a moral, truthful, American hero right up until Nov 4. That could be disastrous.

Yesterday I showed a Dem friend the BraveNewFilms "The Real McCain 1 and 2". She was going to show it to her daughter's boyfriend, who is a rabid McAnus supporter who thinks McAnus is REALLY a straight-talking moral Christian. Pitiful but true.

33. McCain plants stories on this in the NY Times and WaPo. He's desperate.
McCain is out of options. He's tried "he doesn't understand." It fell flat. His idiotic VP hasn't helped him get above 43%. The economy is slapping him around. What does he have left? Going negative.

It will be a constant barrage of Rev. Wright, and William Ayers, and OMG!!

I think it will backfire, because voters are sick of weak on substance candidates whose only play is to engage in character assassination of their opponent. And in Grumpy's case, it's especially true, since he's an unpleasant old fart.

46. "FUD" They are going to try and win by spreading "fear, uncertainty, and doubt "
http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/F/FUD.html

With only weeks left before the election, they are free to lie their asses off to create fear, uncertainty, and doubt regarding Obama.

As the Bush gang has proven, it doesn't matter how you win, once the election is over you are untouchable. There is no reason for the McCain people not to lie at this point- they will never be held accountable for anything they say from now until the election.
