How much are these items where you shop?
From the Los Angeles Times
Prices for 16 basic food items shoot up in third quarter
Flour, potatoes, cheddar cheese and apples show the largest increases.
From Bloomberg News

October 3, 2008

Supermarket prices for 16 basic food items surged to a record in the third quarter because of higher commodity costs and increased processing and transportation expenses, the American Farm Bureau Federation said Thursday.

1. I'll give it a try...
...from my latest shopping trip to a Kroger-owned market in the PNW:

organic apples in several different varieties on sale for $1.44/pound

2 pound brick of quality cheddar for $5.99

locally grown whole fryers on sale for .79 per pound

milk 2 gallons for $5.75

20 oz box toasted oat cereal, store brand, $1.75

Everything else is pretty much the same as your list. I have no idea how much bacon is, so I can't compare.

2. I've wanted to do this for a while now at least since gas prices have gone sky high.
When it first happened, people were saying the rising gas prices will effect food prices but I never read anything on DU about it.

So, I thought it would be interesting if DUers shared how much things cost around the country.

It's really the perfect venue for doing something like that.

Anyway, I remembered, found this link and voila! My dream thread come true!

3. I found the bacon price
$2.50 for a pound of Oscar Mayer, with coupon.

And 10 pounds of russet potatoes are $2.79.

4. It's all 99 cents at the 99 cents store if you can find it.
Seriously, I shop really, really cheap stores in L.A. This week one of the local groceries is advertising 3 pounds of tomatoes for $1. So, my prices may run less.

I think I pay more for chicken, cheese and milk.

5. If you don't mind my asking, but which part of LA do you live in?
The Valley? Downtown? The coast?

The Superior store on Figueroa -- near the Gold Line Stop at the Museum.

You have to watch them. They have great specials, but not all the prices are so great. Our other local store is Food For Less. There is, I think a Von's around here. But my favorite is Trader Joe's on Colorado. There is also a great Trader Joe's in South Pasadena. The expensive stores don't bother to try to do business in our are. I think the next Ralph's is on Colorado in Pasadena. There is a Pavillions in South Pas and also a Von's. This is not what you would call a wealthy area.

6. I haven't shredded my receipt yet so here goes
apples (2lb) $4.99 *
cheese $3.29
chicken $4.06/lb *
eggs $2.29 *
milk (2%) $3.79
potatoes (5lb) $4.99
veg oil (Smart Balance) $4.49

* organic or vegetarian-fed/no hormone

The chicken and the eggs are for our dogs. I make their food each week (vet-approved). I try to buy the healthiest selections for them as well as for us because my husband has high cholesterol. We have very little beef. I make our own bread (last flour purchase was a few weeks ago so I don't know how much it costs). The potatoes are expensive because I prefer the low starch red and the cheapest red potatoes go off within a few days.

Milk we get every week like most people. The rest just happened to be needed this trip and are usually once every two week purchases at most.

7. Looks like you shop like how we shop: you get what you pay for!
I don't mind paying more for good food, I just don't want to get gouged.

Thank you for posting.

10. I only buy when items are on sale.
ie:

Pork Chops: I buy boneless pork loins and cut my own. They were previously sale priced at around $1.69-1.89 #, but now run $1.99-2.29#. That's sale price, regular price is around double that.

Bacon: 2/$4.00-2/$5.00. Those are 1# packages sale price.

Cheese: those prices have increased quite a bit. Sale price is running about $4.60# name brand, while I can still get store brand for about $3.40#

Apples: 1/2 price sale going on right now: 2.49 for a 1/4 peck(about 3 1/2#'s)

Whole chicken: $.98 #

White potatoes: $2.69 for 10#'s, regular $3.99

Ground Beef: We pay about $2.10# from a local meat shop. We use ground beef from him because it has less fat content than the ground chuck from other places.
