DALLAS (AP) - About 550 teachers are among nearly 1,100 Dallas school district employees who are about to lose their jobs.
The Dallas public school trustees voted to lay off the 1,100 employees because of an $84 million shortfall this fiscal year. The school board voted 5-2 yesterday for the layoffs. There was one abstention.
The decision comes three days after Superintendent Michael Hinojosa (ee-noh- HOH'-sah) laid off 63 central-office staffers and eliminated about 100 unfilled jobs. All those positions were for employees working without contracts, so the layoffs didn't require board approval.
Non-contract employees will receive layoff notices by October 9th. Contract employees, including teachers, will be notified between October 10th and the 17th.
More than 400 of the lost jobs include teachers in the core subject areas of math, science, social studies and English. Another 500 employees will also lose their jobs, including teacher aides, hall monitors and clerks.
The Dallas school district is the nation's 12th largest, with more than 160,000 students.
