I just got a letter from my credit card company cancelling my account
because I haven't used it "for an extended period." I do have another one that I use occasionally. I guess I'm the reason we need a bailout, I'm not using my credit card.

I use my USAA credit card
every now and then but hardly keep a balance and I'm getting 6.75% interest with it. Love USAA. Citicard cancelled me, I'm so sad.

I also vote for evil liberals and think gays should be able to marry. I'm also a Vet which really spins their freaking heads.

You're just a nightmare!

Yeah, I have a nice 6.75% card... but I know a lot of folks with balances on cards at 24%+ which is highway robbery if you ask me.

My grandpa used to say, Billy the Kid had guns and a horse, all these people have is a building but they manage to rob you just the same.

17. Early August? If you remember, the CC companies
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 03:32 PM by sfexpat2000
started tightening up their business before any of this hit the press. Before Paulson tanked Lehman.

Maybe we *did* operate with too much debt for all those years. But, it was awful to have no notice at *all*, none, and to scramble for a different way to get things done.

11. I think a lot of credit card companies have started closing accounts
if they aren't used for long periods of time.

It costs them so much to have that account open, don't you know...

At least now we know who to place all the blame on for this sordid affair! Thanks, Bosshog for ruining the American economy. And here I was, stupid me, thinking it probably had something to do with George Bush, the Republicans, and their cronies grabbing every last penny they possibly can from the American people before our economy REALLY goes into the toilet.

23. Got a credit card for my dog once - true story
Way back when I was first married and in law school I decided I needed a credit card so I applied for one (Master Card) and was denied because I was a student without a steady income.

At that time it was NOT illegal to give false information on a credit application. It would only be illegal if you got the credit with false information and then did not pay. The law has changed since.

Anyway, I applied in my dog Ginger's name (using my last name for her), put down as her occupation "watchman", gave her age in dog years (think it was 28) and where they asked her salary I put down 12,000 but instead of using a dollar sign I used a small dogbone symbol in front of the numbers.

Lo and behold, a few weeks later, Ginger got her first credit card with a $500 limit. So I called Master Card and asked them: "My dog just got a Master Card and she wants to know if she should sign with her nose or her paw?" I had to repeat this to several laughing Master Card reps before this guy got on the phone, said he was the President of Master Card, and told me I had committed a crime. I told him sorry, you are wrong, so should she sign with the nose or the paw and he wigged out, demanding I cut up the card and send it to him. I told him no, that he was insulting my dog, that she had every intention of paying her debts and that I was going to call the newspapers because they might like a story about how easy it is to lie and get a credit card after being denied one by telling the truth.

About a day later the guy called me back and offered to give me my own Master Card (which I refused after telling him to take the card and insert it in a body oriface). By the way, about a month later my dog got a letter from Master Card congratulating her on her good credit and raising her credit limit to $750.

I still don't have a Master Card to this day.

30. Even funnier, my Dad got the credit notice
I was away on vacation with my wife when the letter came issuing the dog's credit card and had asked my Dad to open anything that looked like a bill while I was gone. He got all excited on the phone, telling me over and over: "The dog got a credit card, the dog got a credit card" and showed it to everyone on the street. He had no idea I had done it.

41. I've got a similar story.
Technically, it's my wife's story, but she ain't here so I'm gonna tell it.

When she was about 16 or 17, she wanted to join one of those "13 CD's for a penny" record clubs for a 2nd time to get 13 more free CD's, so she filled out the form using her dog's name. Well, it ended up that Smokey Ogden became a better member of the record club than my wife had ever been. He fulfilled his commitment quickly and went on to buy a couple of the monthly selections they automatically sent out (whether he intended to buy them or just forgot to mail back the stupid card I'm unsure).

Well, pretty soon Smokey Ogden received an unsolicited credit card in the mail. All he had to do was call the 800 number and have it activated.

Now maybe there would've been a human on the other end of that call to check things out, but nobody knows for sure because Smokey was a good boy and didn't abuse his credit. But it was a very real credit card, and I've heard the story many times from my wife and my father-in-law.

25. That's what would have happened to me...
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 03:50 PM by skypilot
...IF I had a credit card. A few months ago, my bank turned me down for a credit card because I had no real credit history. I've never owned a credit card. I just always seemed to get along without one. A few years ago, I was getting credit card offers in the mail but I just threw them away because I figured that I wouldn't use them, and if I'd gotten a card I probably wouldn't have. I used to consider getting one for emergencies but that emergency never came up, so I'd probably be in the same boat as BOSSHOG if I had one in my wallet right now.

A few months ago, I was looking at having to move for the first time in a long time, so I figured that having a card might come in handy. But then I got the bad news from my bank. Oh well. I still managed to move without using a card or borrowing money from anyone. I even hand several hundred dollars left over afterwards.

$0 balance.
I called and they said i just have to use it once in the next month and they'll keep it open

When I called I should have asked if it was related to the credit crisis.

Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 05:02 PM by pitohui
one of them i don't even recognize, perhaps i myself cxl'd it years ago because it's from a cc company i greatly dislike and had a service issue with

the other one was an amazon card, they give you $25 to accept their card, so yeah i took their $25 but then never used the card again, i could have cut that one up a long time ago too

next week i hope to have time to go thru my cards and send back some of the orphans since apparently now it's become important to officially close accounts rather than put them in a safety deposit box for "just in case"

actually i started to post "i got 2 of them" (cancellations) but i just remembered a third

whatever, i obviously wasn't using them anyway

43. I also got "the letter" from Citibank yesterday...
..telling me that they were closing it due to inactivity.

I just want to caution folks: one of the factors used in calculating your FICO (credit) score is length of credit history. They look at the length of time you've had your credit accounts open, with longer being better. So if you have a card that you've had for quite some time, it can be detrimental to your credit rating to have that acct closed.

Your FICO score also counts total amount of credit available and the ratio of your debt to the amount of credit you have, so closing an account will raise the debt ratio and consequently lower your FICO score.

There's a great website (among many others) that has solid advice on credit matters and wealth of easy-to-assimilate financial advice at debtsmart.com. You can find out a lot more info on credit cards and factors in your FICO score there. And no, I have no "connections" with it except having read the newsletter for a year or two.

40. got a similar letter earlier this week...
from Macy's - telling me that my card was going to be "converted" to a Citibank card because it hadn't been used in several months. There's no balance, so I really don't care all that much, but I'd rather have it stay a Macy's card than be converted to an all-purpose Visa. At least they gave me an option to keep it as is.
