why does not a single journalist write that Palin is telling the SAME LIE over and over again?
In interviews and also in the discussion with Biden Sarah Palin stated that Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to wipe Israel off the earth:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1495923684143454982&vt=lf&hl=fr

I haven't seen anybody (unfortunately Biden did let this pass) showing that she is simply lying on this issue by repeatedly quoting the wrong translation of Ahmadinejad's speech as did Bush
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/03/20060320-7.html

You don't have to think that Iran's President is a good guy (I don't) but maybe things are more cmplicated than Palin's black-and-white thinking.
In fact Iran's President DIDN'T say that.

What he said is correctly translated:
"Our dear Imam said that the occupying regime must be wiped off the map and this was a very wise statement."

Certainly not a very kind statement towards Israel.
Certainly no statement you've to agree with
but it certainly does not call for wiping Israel off the map.
Why does nobody call Palin out on this repeated lie?

1. Reckless talk, saying that Iran wanted a 2nd Holocaust.
She would be poking a sticking the eye of world leaders constantly, if she had the chance.

2. Biden said that John gets it wrong. That the person who calls the shots in Iran is their
religious leader...which is true.

3. That's true, but no one who's even thinking of voting for McCain believes it
They hear "Every single person in Iran hates every single person in Israel, and by extension everything about our Judeo-Christian way of life."

Doesn't matter who's really in charge in Iran, and it doesn't matter what the translation really indicates; they know what they've been told to think, and they're more than happy think it.

4. I don't get it
Bush and Palin etc repeatedly and conciously misquote Iran's President and basically NOBODY points the finger and says "YOU'RE LYING!"
This is pure disinfo, disinfo which creates fear and can be used to go to war and journalists and politicians do let it pass.
Remember Milosevic was mistranslated, too. It was a key argument for going to war.

5. Couple of reasons, near as I can figure
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 07:23 AM by Orrex
1. Whoever (correctly) pointed that out would be accused of playing with semantics. It's a bullshit charge, but that's the charge that would be endlessly made, and it would stick.

2. The person would also be accused of overly nuanced thinking, and perhaps of being too "sensitive" to Iran.

3. In any media-based discussion of the issue, we'd see endless footage of Ahmadinejad angrily orating and gesturing with a closed fist--complete with all that scary Farsi he talks in--opposite footage of blood-soaked Israeli children fleeing the scene of a car bombing, or the like. The implication will be that Ahmadinejad drove the car to the scene and detonated it himself.

4. The conversation will quickly go from "what did Ahmadinejad really say?" to "why do you want to protect this dictator?" In much the same way that our motives for invading Iraq were morphed at will ("Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia"), the public will be bullied into making a false and fear-goaded choice based on false and tightly-controlled disinformation.

Don't get me wrong--Ahmadinejad is an asshole, but I certainly agree that the mistranslated ravings of one asshole are no justification for invading yet another sovereign nation and murderering 100,000 more brown people.

8. Ahmadinejad did say that, and Biden correctly brought up that Ahmadinejad...
isn't the leader of Iran.
