Silver lining to credit "crisis" - it will kill off local and state gov't welfare for billionaires
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 04:59 PM by ddeclue
Here in Orlando in classic example of welfare for billionaires our city council and county commission ignored the will of the people and agreed to fund a 2 BILLION dollar (+ interest) project to replace the 18 year old TD Waterhouse center (I know people who drive older cars), renovate an empty Citrus Bowl for which there is no longer a football team and replace the performing arts center with a much larger one which the tenants can't afford to operate.

The centerpiece is the replacement of the TD Waterhouse Center (I refuse to call it the Amway Arena) for the benefit of Amway Mogul and Republican arch-conservative Michigan (out of state) billionare Rich DeVos.

DeVos doesn't believe in welfare, unless of course it is for him and his Orlando Magic.

If this credit "crisis" kills his welfare from the Orlando and Orange County taxpayers and stops this boon-doggle then well something good has come from this after all!

The Wall Street bailout is just a larger scale version of ripping off the taxpayers of these welfare for billionaires projects everywhere by local and state governments.

We all spoke out about how this boondoggle venues project would cripple the city's credit for decades and that there were much more worthy projects in town but we were ignored in favor of the Chamber of Commerce fat cats and the billionaire and the Orlando Slantinel when out of its way to spin the story the Chamber's way for fear of lost ad revenues both in their news and opinion page and totally froze out opposing views.

We must take our country back from these weasels both on Wall Street and Orange Avenue - if this kills off the Orange Avenue weaseling then GOOD!

Disgusted in Orlando,

Doug D.

2. In another thread someone quoted Mellon as saying something like..
Depressions return the money to those who should have it.

5. I've been spreading that little jewel around:
"Depressions are the times when money flows back to its natural owners." I'm not sure I have it word for word--iirc he said essentially the same thing more than once, in slightly varying words.

3. wow, I had no idea that DeVos was behind that.
the king of the ponzi scheme himself and his bud.

Same thing is happening in St. Pete, the times is backing the stadium but the backers had to re think their options. Almost right before the defacation hit the fan. They want our waterfront, badly. Of course, we also have rick baker, the guy that will outcharlie the charlie himself.

I have a feeling that the weasels won't be killed off, they'll just put on different hats.

BTW, the times has been losing readership for quite a while. Their inclusion of the obsession dvd didn't earn them many customers at all. Hopefully, the city passes an ordinance to prevent their selling of the times on medians throughout the city. That will be another arrow in their heart. Sadly, Howard Troxler is one of the truth to power guys that is losing out on this.

Peace.

4. But wait there's more....
DeVos was the Michigan Republican candidate for governor in 2006
His wife is the former head of the Michigan Republican Party
He believes in vouchers for home schooling.
He is a fundamentalist nutjob.
His family has serious ties to Custer Battles mercenaries.

6. I hope the new center is scrapped too.
I am more pissed off that the county is planning on putting a hotel on the lake I live on. They held planning meetings to get peoples opinions on future planning but had a map already made up with the hotel on it. A sham of pretending to get resident's opinions on things. Already a done deal.

9. Anything in which the founder of Amway is involved can be assumed to be crooked and self-serving.
