These 19 states are PURGING voters
Edited on Tue Sep-30-08 09:25 PM by WA98296
Nineteen States are ignoring a federal law banning systematic purges within 90 days of a federal election.

They include:

Alabama
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
Hawaii
Illinois
Iowa
Kansas
Maryland
Massachusetts
Nevada
New York
Ohio
Oklahoma
Rhode Island
Washington

Reported on CBS Evening News 9/30/2008
EDITED To add link, however, the article doesn't list the states, I had to freeze Tivo to jot them down:

People have to know they're allowed to fill out a provisional ballot if they run into a problem they don't expect.

10. And The Election Officials Are Allowed to Throw Out Provisional Ballots if They Feel Like It
What recourse do you have if they decide not to count your provisional ballot?
How will you even know?

2. yes, here in Washington, Rossi, the sleazy real estate salesman running
for governor, was on a local tv show bragging about "cleaning" up the voter rolls.

14. He's been blabbing about that for months
mostly in front of closed door Republican crowds. He claims it's gonna help him win.

His pal SoS Sam Reed is trying to make up for failing to deliver him the Governor's mansion last time around.

They have both been falsely claiming that 400,000 voters have been purged from the rolls... but actually more than 900,000 have been removed. Registration efforts have added about 500,000 so the NET loss has been 400k.

If Rossi wins this thing he can thank the Democrats for ignoring this issue. The only Democrat in Washington saying anything about this is SoS candidate Jason Osgood. He could use our support. www.jasonosgood.com

6. Sam's a Republican, but he's more a traditional Repub than a religious reich type
which is what their party has become since the 1980's. Reed didn't toe the Repuke party line to help Rossi steal the election in 2004, so I doubt he would be more likely to do it this time. If Sam had his way, the Republican party would go back to the Dan Evans types and boot the far right to the curb.

That's the good news. The bad news is that Sam IS a fan of "modernizing" elections, and has been even since he was Thurston County auditor. He even "beta-tested" an internet voting system in 1996 - though it was strictly for demonstration purposes and never used for actual voting. At least he realized the security of that system was a joke.

15. Don't be fooled by Sam Reed
He may not be a fundie but he's Karl Rove corrupt and he would've been happy to hand the election to Rossi last time if there had been any legal way for him to do it. This time his efforts might achieve just that.

Reed has managed to create this media myth of himself as some sort of "moderate" kind-hearted non-partisan statesman. People who have known him since his Thurston County days can tell you what total bullshit that is.

17. Don't know if he's responsible, but...
both my husband and my son were purged from the voter rolls. They both re-registered, but both thought they WERE registered.

18. His office is the only one
that can remove people from the statewide voter database.

We are going to see a lot of people in WA show up on election day and learn they aren't registered anymore. Obama will easily win the state anyway, but the Governor's, Attorney General's and Land Commissioner's races will all be affected. Plus a few close State House races, and the Darcy Burner race.

25. Will they be allowed to vote by provisional ballot?
I don't know the rules here, but it seems if you were registered, and the SOS took your name off the list, you should be allowed to vote a provisional ballot while it's being looked into.

26. They should be allowed to...
but in many cases they simply won't know enough to ask for one. That's been the case in other states where this has happened in the past. Unless the election official on the scene offers someone a provisional ballot, most will not even know they exist. And many officials simply don't offer, even if it's policy to do so (which varies from county to county I believe).

23. I just want to warn you...
A DUer I trust from Alaska said something similar about Palin in the summer of 2003. I've become very cynical of all Republicans, because they all seem to be very good at wearing masks and disguises.

8. I don't know about any other states,
but Kansas, as I understand it, is dropping voters who haven't voted in at least four years. Maybe longer.

When I was going door-to-door four years ago, it was amazing how many voter lists still had old voters at an address they hadn't lived at in years.

Of course, if every state had election day registration, things would be a lot better.

16. Everybody's so damned happy that Barack is leading in the polls when it means NOTHING. ZILCH.
As long as they control the voting machines we're fucked.

The Democratic leadership must have a stealth program going on for dealing with this, cause they sure as hell aren't openly dealing with it anywhere except Ohio that I can tell.

Everyone: Go online to your local voter district and ask about this. This is where we can protect our own votes.
