Inauguration DU meetup?
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 08:58 PM by yasmina27
Any tentative plans for a meetup in DC for the grand inauguration of President Obama? My dh, the republican (!) told me today to book a hotel in DC for us to go. Woohoo! Of course, every hotel within 20 miles is already booked solid, or so riculously priced, that it looks like we'll be staying a good hour's metro ride outside of the city proper, but I don't care.

I am SO excited! Our finances have been really tight lately, and although I had dreamed of going, I was never going to ask. He came to me early this evening and said to start looking, the only stipulation being that we can cancel in the dreadful event that McSame/Failin wins.

Also, any hotel suggestions?

I'll sleep on the streets if I have to, but I want to be in DC when Obama is inaugurated.

3. Oh, I would love to stay in Alexandria!
But every hotel there is completely booked.

I've even thought that maybe I'd have better luck come Nov. 5 - all the CONS cancelling their plans. But I don't want to wait that long. I plan to book tomorrow (as long as I can cancel w/o penalty), then look again on the 5th for something closer.

Hope to see everyone there!

4. We won't be very comfortable...her apartment is the size of a
postage stamp and we will be sleeping on the floor: rough when you are in your 50s! I think that postage stamp costs $1100 a month if I remember correctly.

6. There will be demonstrations on Inaguration Day,
no matter WHO gets elected. Answer Coalition is working with the Park Police to get space on the Main Mall, but the Inauguration Committee, or some such right wing group wants to make the thing private. There are lawsuits going and stuff. Check out http://answer.pephost.org for more info.

7. Interesting
Can you provide a more direct link to specific information? I looked at the site, and couldn't find anything referencing what you mentioned. The only action I could see was for anti-war protests on Jan. 20.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about an anti-war protest on that day. If McSame is elected, go for it! But if Obama gets in (which of course he will!), I am more inclined to go with a celebratory atmosphere. Wait and see what he does in terms of bringing our troops home.

My husband and I attended the March on the Capitol, and also the March on the Pentagon(with our 8 & 10 yo daughters - gotta teach them early!), and have no opposition to anti-war marches. But I think we should suspend our efforts temporarily to celebrate this historic moment.

to a story regarding this.

I know that plans are in the works, and they need to be settled up with the Parks Department, so there probably isn't any "official" protest yet.

8. I'm at the bottom end of 95 in Virginia
so I have plans to go to cheer on President Obama.

If the election is stolen again, I will be going to protest.

Either way, Lord willing and the crick don't rise, I'm planning on being in D.C. on Inauguration Day.

9. I look forward to meeting you
for the celebration!

I used to live in Northern VA - 20+ years ago. My first teaching job was near Winchester. I lived in Woodstock and taught in Strasburg.

11. I'm definitely thinking about it
I don't want to jinx it, though, so I'm waiting until November 5 to book a flight.
