With the first Presidential debates a little more than 24 hours away the McCain and Obama campaign are still at an impasse. The Obama campaign insists that Friday's debate go on and McCain feels that because of the current financial crisis it might be a good idea to delay the debate to Oct. 2, and push back the Biden vs. Palin contest to a later date.
Here's a twist on that idea. Let's accept McCain's contention that the Presidential candidates should focus on the biggest financial crisis to grip the U.S. since the Great Depression. But that shouldn't stop the Vice-Presidential candidates from having their debates. After all, VPs stand in as surrogates for the President all the time (foreign visits, state funerals, etc.). And both of them have been busy criss-crossing the country and should be able to stand-in for their respective tickets.
Let's get Sarah Palin and Joe Biden to go at it tomorrow in Oxford, Mississipi. After all, she insists that she's ready to be President. A debate should be no problem for a woman who could be asked to take over the Presidency at a moment's notice. Joe Biden has already handled a few debates this election season (albeit against Democrats).
The networks would have something to show on Friday, the hard-working volunteers at Old Miss. would get a debate, and we'd get to see the Vice-Presidents in action, just a bit earlier.
It would also dispel all those nasty rumours floating around that McCain's campaign suspension is a cheap political trick done because Palin isn't ready for a debate. Unless of course, they're not ready in which case, what the heck are they both doing a heartbeat from the most powerful, most complicated job in the world?
