Obama Draws A Line In the Sand: No Paulson Deal
Obama has stepped up and stated what he needs a bailout plan to include in order to support it, and the Paulson plan simply can't meet his requirements. Obama has just announced his opposition to the basic principles of the Paulson Plan.

No Blank Check: Paulson doesn't get money without oversight or legal responsibility.

Must Be Regulatory Changes: The practices that caused the crisis have to be ended at the same time.

Taxpayers Need More than Consideration: If a huge bailout is to occur, it has to be done in the way that costs taxpayers the least possible.

No Bailout For Foreign Banks From US Money: Instead, all countries should work together to help everyone.

Ordinary People Get Help Too: It can't just be a bailout for Hank's friends, it has to help ordinary Americans too.

108. I get your drift digidigido, but I'd like to point out that this is not a "problem" waiting to be
"solved". It is a PLAN that is trying to be IMPLEMENTED.

This is not some unforeseen consequence of a system that was not thoroughly thought out before it was set up and put into motion. This is the next step in liquidating the U.S. Treasury into the pockets of the international business and corporate cartels. It was planned and put into effect by very smart, forward-thinking financial wizards, who DON'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT THE U.S. or IT'S CITIZENS.

They are all about money and power and how to take it from everyone else. Bottom line.

I'm glad that Obama is hanging tough on this one. But it's going to be interesting to see who caves first: Pelosi, Reid, or Obama.

109. Disaster capitalism by the masters. But it's sometimes nice to pretend for a few seconds
that they didn't know what they were doing, you know.

Rightly or wrongly, I don't think Obama would cave first. They may not cave. This could be a pivotal moment in the history of the world, and they wouldn't want to go down in history as pusillanimous myrmidons, "time-servers", who let the country down in its hour of greatest need.

116. I wonder if that East German Communist dramatist, Bertholt Brecht,
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 01:44 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
realised just how prophetic his words would turn out ot be, when he said that "it is easier to rob by setting up a bank than by holding up a bank clerk."

And how about Thomas Jefferson's words:

"I sincerely believe that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale."

Was he talking about funding from tax dollars?

Make these fuckers work off their debts. There should be no hiding behind a corporate veil. Management of a failed corporation should be held responsible just like the individual. Those on the boards should should return every dollar they were paid.

The prayer is that the final bill will not get through without as many of these mark-ups as possible.
I don't know what the odds of that are, though. Plenty of Dems swimming in Wall Street cash, Obama no exception.
He's going to need a lot of back-up.

the Republicans who caused the crisis. They must accept the Democats' terms or theyw ill be held responsible for the economic consequences. The people will not blame the Democrats for stopping the looting, even if the Republicans' intransigence brings about the catastrophe. It will come anyway in a while, but I mean at this current juncture.

16. Soooo glad he took this stance.
The proposed Paulson deal is a game-changer. Everyone, left and right, is furious about this giveaway to the world's most irresponsible companies and the individuals who have run them into the ground. Unless the plan is substantially altered, I expect many of the politicians voting for it will unexpectedly find themselves on the job market in November. And if McSame votes for it and Obama votes against it...

95. Not so great. His policies - especially his weakness - created the mess we're in today
He was a politician first and last. He only played a statesman on radio.

His "dollar a year men" came from industry, continued to be paid by industry, and created the military-industrial complex and consumerist economic culture that are killing us today. It's not clear whether he wasn't smart enough to see what they were doing, or not strong enough to stop them, or actually believed that government should serve business rather than the people.

It was his proto-fascist servility toward Big Business that got Huey Long to turn against him - he got Long's support by promising to implement wealth redistribution, but then reneged.

Alan Brinkley: "The End of Reform: New Deal Liberalism in Recessioin and War". He supports his arguments very well, and I certainly can't find any holes in them. I was born during FDR's third term, and grew up with the standard mythology. It's only recent scholarship that's started to bring to light some of the less-savory bits.

I have another history of the same period, but unfortunately can't put my hand on it right at the moment. Both authors seem to agree (to the extent that they talk about the same things, which in general they don't).

And before you rupture yourself laughing at the idea that some of FDR's policies were fascist, study the National Recovery Administration. It handed the big-corporation bosses a blank check to fix prices, carve up territories, set production quotas, and suppress labor and small companies.

the cabal of fascist bankers General Smedley Butler exposed failed in their efforts to have him assassinated. In the circumstances, what he achieved was little short of miraculous.

It may be just my wishful thinking, but the Dem "leaders" seem to be taking their cue from Obama, and rightly so, as he needs to finally do the leading for our spineless leaders. Pelosi and Reid seem to have come out today against Paulson's demands. Oh lordy, could they just stick with it? I think so, if Obama keeps control of the Democratic message.

They are only doing it because if by so freak of nature Obama is actually elected, they will be out in the cold if they don't support him now. It's a win-win for them. They get to look good for a while, and if in the end McSame winsthey will still be our leaders and can say I told you so. they have to prove to me that they are not spineless creeps, so far not so good on that point. My fondest hope is for Al Franken on the senate floor, giving them hell,as he has nothing to lose. He is smarter then most and funnier then all, I'll be addicted to C-Span 2, just waiting for Al to put them on the skewer. If we can save our country from the fascists, it will be a fun session to watch.

83. Notice that ordinary people will still have to pay. He should be demanding
that the wealthy alone do the paying, if necessary beggaring the ones who produced the mess (including the politicians who voted to deregulate). Only if completely stripping the malefactors of their wealth isn't enough should ordinary people get stuck with any part of the check.

But that's not what he's advocating. He's doing the usual, with a slight genuflection toward people's righteous anger. But basically we will end up paying, and the crooks will end up walking.

104. NO CHECK EVER FOR THESE CROOKS. CHECK ONLY FOR AMERICANS WHO NEED HELP
If the American People with their Representation fail to arrest all crooks involved with this scam that has been going on for who knows how long, the Dollar and all Credibility will go down the tubes. All Foreign Investors will pull out of the American Market and your 401k's will be worthless. It needs to happen now. A statement that we intend to get to the bottom of what has happened and that all crooks will be jailed. Without that no amount of money for bailouts or loans will do anything.

This is what he said "Mr. Paulson is resisting efforts to limit the pay of executives whose firms participate in the program and plans to fight it "hard," according to a person familiar with the matter. He fears that provision would render the program moot, since many firms might choose not to participate." Can you believe this? I am more than xxxxx! I will not stand by and let this happen calmly. These thieves need to be in jail now!

Look if this is truly about Businesses and Future Homeowners being able to get loans then Start a new agency that will loan the money to those who need it if they qualify instead of giving it to Businesses that have managed poorly. Since we now own Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac why not make Fannie Mae for homes and Freddie Mac for businesses and those two use the TRILLION DOLLARS for loans. No BAILOUTS for Businesses. Loans Yes Bailouts NO if they qualify!!!!!!!. BAILOUT HOMEOWNERS that need the help if they qualify ONLY. You got to think faster than these crooks people!!!!

4% . Let the failing bond holders manage these mortgages. That would give them capital to invest, the 30yr fixed crowd would have somr discretionary income to put into the economy, and ARM investors could refile for the 4% qualifications.
The failing companies could stay in business, responsible mortgage holders would be rewarded and some less fortunate folks could find better circumstances.

126. Average taxpayers just don't get it at all
They think that the financial industry is in crisis because they have lost all this money. But they don't ask, nor does anyone else ask, who these financial companies lost all that money to! It's a disgrace. A farce.

Money doesn't evaporate. Money lost by one is money gained by another. Just like in poker, one player loses while another player wins. Money in the financial markets has not been lost, has not become evaporated. It has been shifted to others who made huge profits.

Now these financial institutions are crying to us, the tax payer, complaining that because they lost in their huge 'financial poker game' that we need to give them 700,000,000,000 to make them whole again so they can 'stay in the game'.

Screw em all! They should be going back to their cronies who they lost all this money to and ask THEM for a loan to stay in the game.

A dollar is never lost when making bets. It is only shifted to another who is a dollar richer. These Wall St. idiots have made huge bets that they couldn't cover and now they want us the TAXPAYER to pay off their debts so they can continue on with their normal lives as if they never made these bets.

SCREW EM ALL!

I'm not as a TAXPAYER willing to carry tens of thousands of additional debt for my family so I can GIVE these idiots a free ride with no consequences. They made their bed so let them lay in it. When they were making billions and billions in profits over the last decades. When they awarded themselves billions and billions in bonuses over the last decades I don't remember these fools 'loaning' me a few bucks to put food on my families table when I was out of work and struggling. I don't remember these fools helping me out when I couldn't pay my hospital bills for my sons catastrophic injuries in a car accident.

Now they want me to pay for their mistakes?

NO NO NO NO NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
