He said "I don't know why anybody would want to vote for Obama, he'll just tax us and give it away to a bunch of irresponsible welfare people"

I shot right back at him " I don't want to hear another damned word about welfare!! If the government can see fit to bail out companies like Bear Stearns, Fannie and Freddie and AIG to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars, due to the IRRESPONSIBILITY AND OUTRIGHT GREED OF WEALTHY EXECUTIVES WHO SHOULD DAMN WELL KNOW BETTER, then we can damn well spend some taxpay money TO PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE in this country!! Now get the fuck out of my office!!

Welfare was never more than a miniscule percentage of the national budget and after it was "reformed" in the 90s you only get it for a short time before they kick you off the rolls. But I've found that reasoning with these people by pointing out how much is wasted on greedy defense contractors and corporate welfare is useless. Somehow, if the people below them on the socio-economic ladder are punished it makes their own situation more tolerable. Your delivery driver could be reduced to living in a cardboard box under a bridge but he'll still support the GOP as long as the brown people next to him have smaller boxes.

We were getting estimates for our floors -- long story but the short version is they need to be ripped out and replaced (at our builder's expense following a lawsuit settlement). This young asshole came into MY house and was just starting the estimate (measuring, etc). Told him we're also thinking about retiling the kitchen floor (depending on cost) and I'd like a separate estimate for that but suggested he do both now so he didn't have to come back (the flooring retailer is about 1/2 hour away). I added "given the cost of gas" that he'd probably prefer that. Asshole launched into offshore drilling (for it), Republicans (for them), Democrats (against them), etc. I shut him down fast. I spoke with his boss later (his boss called me, not V.V.) and told him I didn't appreciate this guy coming into MY house and spouting off about his political views during a business deal. His boss was FURIOUS with him!! I slept well that night....I doubt the asshole did.
