McCain accused of 'Hispandering'Chad Groening- OneNewsNow - 9/17/2008 6:00:00 AM
An English language advocate says GOP presidential candidate John McCain is completely wasting his time catering to the Hispanic vote because it makes him appear to be "two-faced."
Recently Senator McCain (R-Arizona) appeared at a town hall meeting in Orlando where he promised those in attendance immigration reform as president, including a guest worker program for those in the country illegally.
But Jim Boulet, executive director of English First, says this is the same issue the American public has consistently rejected -- and one which McCain has not pushed while campaigning to other groups.
"It led McCain to appear to be two-faced," Boulet comments. "And goodness knows if you're going to run as a reform candidate, you need to at least let your yea be yea and your nay be nay."
According to Boulet, past election results indicate that when Republicans pander to Hispanics it simply does not work.
"Remember all the 'Hispandering' that George Bush did in 2000 -- campaigning in Spanish, denouncing official English?" he asks. "Well, 64 (percent) of the Hispanic vote went to Al Gore. Not only is this Hispandering annoying to the rest of the electorate, it doesn't work."
Boulet says while Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) is no better than McCain on this issue, he clearly stands to be the beneficiary of such political maneuvering.
