I live in Chambers County, you know, that bump in the road between Houston and Beaumont. We're the county with the bridge that lets you get from East to West on I-10.
We got the crap kicked out of us too, we're bloodied and brusied and we'd like a little help. We're not whining, OH far from it, just asking for things so we can help ourselves. By the way, we've been working NON STOP since Saturday morning to get this place in order.
We feel like Mayor White: Give us what we need in the way of supplies and money, we'll take care of ourselves. We really don't need FEMA (Fix Everything MY A$$).......
Oh, by the way, Governor Perry, I met some of the National Guard here. They were real concerned, so concerned they stopped me and asked me not if they could help, but where the restaurant was that was serving the free food. They JUST got to town! Eat some MRE's like we've done today.
PS:
Mr. Bush, I got something you can hold............"

And these are Texans...

1. I wonder if these people gave a rat's ass when NOLA folks were looking for help?
No one wishes an emergency on anyone, but these folks probably voted for Bush and didn't think twice about the people from NOLA after the cameras were turned off.

4. Many, many Texans helped Katrina people....I particularly remember reading
about a group of WWII pilots flying stuff in for the survivors.
Can you imagine how old those pilots were??? And that's just a small example that really stuck in (what's left of) my brain -

5. Many, many of the refugees from NOLA went to Houston.

And got help there. So no, your speculation is out of line. One thing good about the South -- it is very neighborly. People absolutely help each other in time of need.

Edit to add: Houston proper is actually a blue city, although many of its suburbs are deep red.

6. Houston and NOLA

As one example, the Houston Community College system provided free tuition to NOLA evacuees who took up residence in Houston.
