Florida, Heads Up! Let's Hear From Hurricane Andrew Victims Regarding This Phenomena
I was in Hurricane Andrew. We were advised to leave South Florida. Some of us did, some of us didn't. We stayed. In the aftermath it was total destruction from Coral Gables to Homestead. My husband drove to Stuart, 100 miles North, every 3-4 days for supplies. There were no road blocks to come back South. The National Guard came buy our communities and distributed food to our locals who were living in our devastated homes. Yes, people were in shelters but not sent to another State. They COULD come home if they wanted to. We were out of power for 7 weeks!

It should be our right to Camp, if we want to, on our land.
Perhaps Country Walk and Leisure City had another experience? (Those communities were most affected)

This new program deters people from evacuating. It is so wrong.

1. I live on the west coast of Florida, and went through Charlie....

We were not allowed back for 4 days. That was 2004. As for Texas, no idea but I do know their interestate system makes evacuation more difficult because people try to go in all directions rather than just heading North like we in Florida do.

Also, about Andrew, there was massive fraud and thievery after that storm. It's not really a good example.

2. The "fraud and Theivery" after that storm were not looters, it was roofers. That was well after .

4. I was on the north fringe, roof partly destroyed, ten days of tree clean-up.

Ten days without electicity (one of the lucky ones). I was able to drive north for ice and water. The most damaging problem (because it haunted me for years) was roofer thieves and a wrong assessment of the repairs needed from the insurance company. The bad work and advice became a decade old problem until I sold the house (with all the roof history documented and with inspections). Much out-of-pocket repairs. Very costly.

5. I went through Andrew.
Just north of Cutler Ridge and you're absolutely right. We were allowed to stay through horrendous devastation. People didn't even get FEMA trailers to live in either. They erected tent cities instead and people stayed there for months. The National Guard would air drop supplies into destroyed areas and hand them out to people still living there. I remember the National Guard driving around my block every few days, handing out MRE's and bottled water. The soldiers would stand on the street corners but they weren't an opressive presence. They were very friendly, almost neighborly. You could walk up and talk to them about what was going on. We even had people from the counties up north come down and sell generators to people (my dad bought one).
