Video of Wayne Dolcefino confronting Perry about Ike media blackout
There are some strange goings on in the aftermath of Ike. This is a local reporter complaining about the access to Bolivar peninsula. Unpresedented in his 30 yrs. of reporting. And why, just some 24 hours after the storm are CNN, MSNBC, and FOX in locktep showing back to back repeats of candidates biographies for hours on end now?

1. This is suppression of freedom of the press.
The press needs to go to court and get an injunction.

By the way, Perry has that same look as Bush. Are they related?

3. Bolivar must have been decimated.
The lessons of Katrina: control the press coverage, get out in front of the spin, worry less about inadequate response and more about controlling how it's perceived.

Repuke governor covering his ass should rot in hell with all the rest.

6. It has been ...

But, that's part of what is weird about this. We already know that the damage to Bolivar is off the charts bad. We already have video and photos from it as well as testimony from people who were there ... or were at High Point anyway. KHOU has some raw video without commentary they shot before the FAA shut down the airspace that shows the area and a story titled "Crystal Beach is Gone." (There's another oddity here, though. They have footage they label as Bolivar, but it's a video of still images, which I don't quite get.)

Anyway, it's weird. We know it's bad already. What, precisely, is being hidden?

I suppose the real answer lies in the matter of controlling perception. Knowing something and having it repeated with more and more visuals so that you don't just know it but have it burned into your mind so that you have time to consider what all of it means are two different things.

14. Media is probably buckling to Bush Admin claims that reporting the damage ....
... would unfairly influence the voters in November. (Just like the NY Times held back on reporting the warrantless wiretapping program before the 2004 election.)

7. Accolades to Wayne...
to FEMA, the Governor, and to the men behind the iron curtain, a big ole FU! Seems with each passing week, the pretense that we live in a democracy becomes ever more unbelievable.

9. Wayne almost got Perry to admit the Federal government was behind the blackout.
THAT was good journalism right there. Perry was a real dear in the headlights. K&R

10. I don't think there's any almost to it
Perry DID admit the Feds shut down all air traffic around the site. And he did not seem too happy about it himself.

... and filling the whole weekend with candidate bios *did* seem bizarre, given what was going on.

16. They don't want us
to see the dead bodies and go katrina on them, not like we would see any. From what I can tell from Google Earth there is nothing left of Bolivar. It breaks my heart and at the same time makes me very, very angry. I can't believe it's all gone I used to take the boat to Galveston from there.
