Sarah Palin's pipeline
http://www.reportonbusiness.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080911.wdrohan0912/BNStory/robColumnsBlogs/home

“I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history and when that deal was struck, we began a nearly forty billion dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence.”

-Sarah Palin in an address to Republican delegates, Sept. 3, 2008

Anyone listening to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin at the recent U.S. Republican convention would believe that TransCanada workers are poised, shovels at the ready, to start construction of a 2,760-kilometre pipeline bringing natural gas from Alaska through Canada to the lower 48 states. They would be wrong.

The companies who have won the licence from Alaska to build the pipeline, TransCanada Alaska and Foothills Pipe Lines (both wholly owned subsidiaries of TransCanada Corp.), must still cross numerous hurdles before actual construction can even be contemplated.

U.S. analysis of the deal, including articles in the Washington Post and New York Times , tends to focus on potential American obstacles, ignoring the fact that 1,550 kilometres of the pipeline would run through Canada. The assumption is that if U.S. conditions are met, Canada will fall in line.

2. The "deal" is a scam. A half billion dollar handout to a company that is in dire need of
funds for another project, called "Keystone" an oil pipeline between Alberta, Canada and Port Arthur, Texas that it is building in partnership with Conoco-Philips. The project has run into numerous problems including lawsuits from Native Americans in Canada, landowners in the U.S. and calls from U.S. mayors to ban the dirty oilsands oil from Alberta which the pipeline will carry.

Ironically, after pretending that it was in competition with Conoco and BP to build to Alaska gas pipeline, as soon as TransCanada got its half billion dollar govt handout, it announced it was going to partner with its business partner Conoco (and BP, which drills for a lot of natural gas) and Exxon (which also drills for a lot of natural gas) to build the pipeline. Since BP and Conoco were already building a gas pipeline at their own expense, it makes you wonder What the hell did Palin pay TransCanada $500 million for? The money was supposed to help them line up gas drillers to agree to use their pipeline (since they do not drill)---however, they obviously had planned in advance to build it with the two biggest drillers in Alaska, BP and Exxon. And it was supposed to make them independent of the other big oil/gas companies---and yet, they had obviously planned in advance to work with the biggest oil company in Alaska, their partner in Keystone, Conoco.

The gas which they will ship from Alaska to the lower 48 will be needed to refine the Alberta ool, which requires three times as much natural gas to clean it up. Alaskans, who were worried that they would lose their natural gas--and with it, a cheap, clean source of heating---were right to be concerned. Palin signed away Alaska's energy independence, handed out half a billion dollars, and accelerated global warming so that the End of Days would come more quickly.

This is all documented in my journals.

And she was rewarded with a VP offer.
