Local newspaper misquoted me. How do I confront this?
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 09:48 PM by arcadian
At a protest. I was interviewed by a reporter, they have me quoted as saying something that I did not say. The protest was back in June and I didn't realize that they even printed an article about it. Just saw it today for the first time. Is there somebody I can contact at this paper to confront the reporter? The ombudsman or somebody? Ultimately I would like for the reporter's notes to be reviewed, because the article is a total falsification, at least as far as the small blurb about me is concerned.

1. Give them a call
After all, the New York Times just issued a correction for a mistake from a 1960 article.

2. It's you they're misrepresenting. Write a letter to them and their competition. n/t

3. Newspapers operate on a short cycle. If you didn't bring this issue up within a few days
of the time they printed the article, there's nothing to discuss: You don't really want to tell them you generally don't read their paper, do you?

Lesson: If you're in a protest, check the press coverage immediately: after all, it's part of why you're having the protest

In the future, if something like this happens, and you catch it immediately -- contact an editor. Be polite. Most of the time, you're probably not going to get much out of it -- but you might get more careful reporting next time
