How hand-picked are the crowds for Letterman's show?

I say this because they genuinely seemed to be digging Obama.

I know that it is New York City, where Obama is very popular, so that might have had something to do with it.

1. unless they did something different
tickets are usually reserved months in advance.

And I really doubt that some guy who's vacationing in NYC from Michigan, and got tickets to the late show 2 months ago would be pushed out the door to get a pro Obama audience.

2. My guess is
people wait in line without knowing who is on. It's tourists and maybe some locals, but I don't think guests are announced.

on our way somewhere else, they were looking for a few more people to fill some seats and they asked us if we were interested. So, I'd say: not very.

4. They aren't hand picked, they are first come first
served. I'm guessing since it was advertized he was going to be on, the line was there long and early..

6. You sound like you are surprised that most people 'dig' Obama?
Especially in NYC? Where people *think* and actually *live* - and aren't so knotted up by 'convention'?

11. I'm guessing here but I'm thinking it's because the crowd
isn't made up of NYC liberals, you know, tourists. ;)

13. thinking again
they probably fill like 2/3 of the audience via tickets online well in advance, then the other 1/3 is walkup crowd, guests friends, etc.. etc..

14. There generally seems to be quite a few out-of-towners there..
at least when he interacts with the audience directly. They have online requests, in person requests (for a future date) and a stand-by process. I think attending these sorts of shows is something people do when they are here for a visit.

15. I was in the audience years ago
and it was totally first come first served and we didn't even know for certain who the guests were when we asked for tix. I think they were groovin' on O because he rocks.

17. I went in 2004
Got reservations a couple of months in advance. Saw Marilyn Manson as the music act.

We weren't screened or anything. Just kind of a "sit here" place.
