1. Ike is making me nervous

and I live on the opposite side of the continent. I get antsy not being able to do anything helpful. Batten down what's left of your hatches and stay safe, okay?

3. The problem with Ike is that it has a lot of warm water
to strengthen again.

2. It IS moving, right? I did see some pics earlier, and it looked
bad. It's down to a cat. 2, last I heard, and moving through Cuba. Then it could enter the gulf and gains speed, so I hear.

Haiti's really bad, too.

And who is next?

6. Haiti has been devastated.
Already the poorest country in this hemisphere, and now has gotten hit with 3 major storms in 3 weeks. I wonder how bad it really is there, I don't think we'll get the true scale of damage and loss for sometime.

10. I remember a story from before hurricane season where
Haiti residents were eating mud pies. No nutrition, but filled the belly. :(

11. But you should see how the elites live in Haiti
They hated Aristide.

12. I didn't know there were elites in Haiti, and don't really know
much about Haiti other than their pervasive poverty.

I've been to DR and had a good time taking buses, watching whales, but had a friend just come back (from an all-inclusive) and swears it's not safe to go past the gates. I find that hard to believe.

14. You have to be alert wherever you travel but I
always laugh at tourists who stay inside gated hotels. They miss the entire country they're visiting. My nieces and nephews laugh at their friends when they discuss visits to Jamaica. After years of holidays with me one of my nieces spent six months in Costa Rica and then spent a semester in Spain.
