More lies about Obama's tax plan.
I went to lunch yesterday with some people from work and someone said he's not going to vote for Obama because he is eliminating the one-time tax write-off on any profit from selling your home. I asked him where he heard that because I doubt that it's true. Anyway, he sent me the e-mail, part of it is:

MCCAIN
0% on home sales up to $500,000
per home (couples) McCain does not
propose any change in existing
home sales income tax.

OBAMA
28% on profit from ALL home sales

How does this affect you?
If you sell your home and make a profit, you
will pay 28% of your gain on taxes.
If you are heading toward retirement
and would like to down-size your
home or move into a retirement
community, 28% of the money you
make from your home will go to taxes. This
proposal will adversely affect the
elderly who are counting on the income
from their homes as part of their retirement income.

This is all debunked on snopes.

1. Even better than the Snopes debunking...
(although I thank you profusely for posting it, and will recommend your thread) is this Tax Policy Center study.

http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/UploadedPDF/411693_CandidateTaxPlans.pdf

I intend to read it, link to it, and razz any wingnut who hasn't read it.

I raced ahead to page 35, whence this quote is pulled along with a terrific bar graph, emphasis mine:

Senator Obama’s plan raises after-tax incomes by more than 5.5 percent for those in the bottom quintile and also provides more modest increases for those in the next three quintiles (figure 1). The top quintile would experience an average tax increase because of the hikes in the tax rates on capital gains and dividends and the increases in the top two individual income tax rates. The increase in taxes would be dramatic for those at the very top of the income scale, representing 8.7 percent of after-tax income for the top 1 percent of households and 11.5 percent of income for the richest 1 in 1,000.

In contrast, the McCain plan would provide virtually no benefit to households in the bottom quintile, and very modest benefits to those in the next three quintiles. The top quintile would receive a tax cut of more than 3 percent of after-tax income. Within the top quintile, the richest 1 percent of households would receive an average tax cut of 3.4 percent. That figure rises to almost 4.4 percent for the top 0.1 percent of the income distribution.

5. Also forward this to your coworker, some of these facts are devastating and not widely known

Feel free to leave off 9 & 10 if you think it takes away from the rest. At any rate, it's all sourced. Most right wing emails never have a source (and if they do it's Limbaugh.com, etc.).

11. He said he'd read it later - which he probably won't.
But, I like to make him aware that the facts are out there.

9. Lies And Damned Lies...
The corporate media rarely mentions this...

When the GOOPers claim Democrats will "raise taxes", this claim is made due to sunsetting of the boooooshie tax breaks for the rich that happens in 2010. They want desperately to make all those cuts permanent...and if they rest to where they were in 2001, yes many taxes will go up...back to where they once were and would be a big increase to the rich. And, yes, without a revision, many in what is left of the middle class would get hit hard, too...people who had hurt by bracket creep as ALL incomes rose in the 90's.

Senator Obama's plan addresses revising the tax structure before the 2010 sunset that keep the existing brackets for a vast majority of Americans...(making under $200k) and even lower it, while returning those over that amount to the older rate.

The BIG LIE here is that the Democrats aren't going to make this happen, it was the Repugnicans who did. To get this thing passed, boooshie purposly pushed this mess onto whomever succeded him and this trap was set long ago...so muchso that the corporate media doesn't even remember. They have eaten these talking points for so long, they have long lost perspective on this matter...not to mention the Charlie Gibsons who LOVE the big money they make and want even bigger tax breaks...and his buddy, Gramps, want ths same thing (Cindy needs a $200k set of diamond earrings).

The GOOP controlled House & Senate could have made these cuts permanent, but they didn't. They blew it on their watch...like so many other things.

Lastly, I heard the old bullshit of "tax & spend" last night...a broken record long destroyed by the Clinton years. The 90's was one of the few times where the government actually paid for what it needed with the tax revenues it was collecting, thus creating the surplus. No, they didn't take this country out of debt...the Raygun/Boooosh years left a large nut that the Clinton years had barely cracked...and is nothing compared to the past 7 1/2 years of totally fleecing the treasury. The mess awaits the next President...

10. More lies...

This is what’s wrong with our politics. At the Republican convention, speaker after speaker just flat-out lied, and our news media isn’t calling them on any of it. YOU CAN’T GET THE STORY FROM THE PUNDITS.

They smeared Barack Obama repeatedly and told lies big and small.

Here’s just a few of them:

- Sarah Palin and John McCain claim that Barack Obama wants to raise our taxes, but the vast majority of families are way better off under Barack Obama’s plan. JOHN MCCAIN ACTUALLY WANTS TO TAX OUR HEALTH BENEFITS!!! Barack Obama’s plan only raises taxes on people with individual incomes over a quarter-million dollars.

- Sarah Palin and John McCain lie and claim that their plan is better for people like us. They don’t cut taxes for us hardly at all, and wipe out that cut with their plan to tax our health benefits!!!! Barack Obama actually cuts middle class taxes to try to restore fairness that was lost under Bush.

- Sarah Palin lied when she said Barack Obama had authored “no major law, not even in the state senate.” This is just a bald-faced lie. In fact, just in the US Senate, Barack Obama passed the most sweeping reform package since Watergate, and reached across party lines to pass, with Senator Lugar, legislation to help keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists and, with Senator Coburn, legislation to create a revolutionary database that makes government more transparent and accountable.

- Sarah Palin and John McCain continue to lie about Barack Obama’s energy plans. They keep pushing more drilling as the main answer to our problems, when it won’t do anything to lower the price of gas. And then they claim Barack Obama, in the words of Palin, “is against producing . Barack Obama is for producing more clean energy and ending our addiction to oil. He has the most comprehensive energy plan of any Presidential candidate in history.

- The Republicans keep attacking Barack Obama’s plans for Iraq, even though the Iraqi government AND THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION just signed an agreement that follows the plan Barack Obama has been advocating for months.

- It’s the same thing on negotiations and diplomacy. Sarah Palin attacked Barack Obama for holding the position that the Bush Administration has belatedly been forced to adopt: holding direct talks with Iran. We’re too strong a country to be afraid of talking to Iraq.

It goes on and on. I’m tired of the lies. AND I’M TIRED OF THE MEDIA NOT TELLING US THE TRUTH ABOUT THEM!

Let’s pass this along and let everyone know what’s really happening.
