Kwame Kilpatrick resigns as part of a plea deal
DETROIT - Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to a pair of felony charges on Thursday in a sex-and-misconduct scandal and will step down after months of defiantly holding onto his job leading the nation's 11th-largest city.
The plea deal brings to an end a seven-month-long ordeal that led to felony charges against Kilpatrick and plunged the city, region and state into political chaos.

As part of the deal, the 38-year-old Democrat is to serve four months in jail and five years of probation. He also will pay $1 million in restitution over the five-year probationary period.

It's finally over.

5. From the Free Press: Obama says it's time for Kilpatrick to go
"Sen. Obama believes that Mayor Kilpatrick's ongoing troubles and the serious charges against him have been a distraction that the city cannot afford," said Obama spokesman Brent Colburn.

"He believes it is time for the mayor to step aside so that the city can move forward and get back to business."

4. I am afraid it is not.
There is still the sentencing for the no contest on the felonious assault of a police officer to come up. Also, Christine Beatty has yet to stand trial and/or strike her own deal. I am afraid this city will yet be dragged through the mud. But yay for Detroit in getting Monica Conyers as Council Pres. She will (hopefull) do much to help bring about change with regard to the mess that is the city's public school system.

6. Your comment about Monica Conyers was sarcastic, right?
That's the bad thing about all this, is that she is going to be the city council president for the time being. Unless the feds finally get her on the trash contract thing that they are investigating.

8. Nice...
This is really nice Freddie. Detroit does not deserve to be slammed like that because the Mayor is a sleazebag. There are many good people here, and many nice neighborhoods and venues. This city does not deserve to be kicked when it's down.
